WEEKLY ROUND-UP! SEP. 16- SEP. 22 2013!

WEEKLY ROUND-UP PRESENTS

7. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/20/13! Terrible lizard.

Last week we got a look at these dinosaurs and, tomorrow, we should expect more Pokénews!

6. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/18/13! Roulette.

On the subject of amorphous pink blob Pokémon, what abominably boring "adorable" creatures do you expect to see in X & Y?

5. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/16/13! Textbook.

Made-up on the spot fan theory #387: J. K. Rowling will reveal she is a witch-- just like Anne Rice is probably a vampire and George R R Martin is the true king of Westeros.

4. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/19/13! Vizier.

Who is your favorite Disney villain? The one from my childhood is probably Jafar, Frollo is probably the most interesting, and the one I find most amusing/unique is Gaston.

3. WTF WEDNESDAY PRESENTS FEDORAS, FILM NOIR, & STARFOX 64!

I dunno why, exactly, but I've been getting these awful gut pains, nausea, etc. for weeks. I think it's a mixture of stress and bad dietary habits. It's been a stressful year...

2. MUSIC MON! MIAMI CONNECT YOUR EAR TO KOREAN LEAGUE OF LEGENDS SCIENCE REMIXES!

Seriously, if you haven't watched Miami Connection yet, do yourself a favor; get some friends together, watch it, riff on it, etc.

1. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/22/13! Count to 10 in Japanese.

Ichi, ni, san, yon, go, roku, nana, hachi, kyuu, juu! DATTEBAYO!

WORD OF THE DAY! 8/26/13!

salutations [sal-yoo-tehy-shuns]
noun
1. An act, phrase, gesture, etc, that serves as a greeting.

EX. Salutations. I thought we'd take things a little slow on this Monday. For some of you, it's just another Monday and, for others, it's the first day of school in a new semester in your academic quest to acquire knowledge, experience, and a diploma.

Today, could lead to any number of bizarre scenarios and you might be scared...

Others of you might grow bored during a first day orientation in a class, look outside and see the deer that has been stalking you and you may need to be defended by the principal..

Just try to take a deep breath and put your best foot forward...

Just try to make the right decisions because there are an infinite number of possibilities that you will have to navigate...

So seize the day! You're an adult now! Be the very best you that ever was! (Also, does Ash look older here? Or is it just me?)

That's all folks!

MUSICA MONDAY! BIOSHOCK W/ LYIRCS & MORE

MUSICAL MONDAY PRESENTS
BIOSHOCK: TOBOSCUS & BRENTALFLOSS

For today's Musical Monday we have two tunes based off of what could become one of the most innovative and engaging series in gaming history, Bioshock, specifically Bioshock and its upcoming sequel that takes us from the depths of the ocean to the height of American pie in the sky antics of Bioshock Infinite some time early next year. The cool thing about the music dedicated to these very cool games is that the two entertainers in question have a very different approach to the material:

Tobuscus's approach is part of his "literal trailer" series which, combined with his personality, has netted him enough attention be involved in a couple of official trailers for television. He simply watches a trailer, sings about it, and tells a story; sometimes accurate and sometimes completely ridiculous. This one is an especially good trailer to do because of the serious tone, the subtle but interesting music, and the cool story within a trailer feel it already has going for it. Its probably my favorite of his literal trailers, besides perhaps the one for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood which got me to buy the game.

While I really like Tobuscus's Literal trailers, if there was any justice in the internet, brentalfloss's work would be as appreciated and as popular as Tobuscus's. Taking an arguably more creative and easily more time-consuming approach to his songs, brentalfoss usually takes classic music from video games, like Zelda W/ Lyrics, remasters and/or remixes them, and puts lyrics to them usually with some interesting video accompaniment . With the Bioshock Song he took a riskier approach than usual, going for a completely original work that pays homage to one of the best games of all time, and created something that is uniquely brentalfloss (and his name is spelled in lowercase cuz...).

In the end, I implore to check out both songs, subscribe, like, favorite their channels, comment here about your thoughts on the two songs, and share them with friends. If you can throw me some support too, that'd be swell. Also, check out the link below to a vintage Bioshock article I wrote when the blog was new.

WEEKLY ROUND-UP! 7/16-7/22 2012! "KEEP CALM AND..." WEEK!

WEEKLY ROUND-UP PRESENTS
"KEEP CALM AND..." WEEK!

7. WORD OF THE DAY. 7/16/12. Free boat.

Oddly enough, I never got to play the original Wind Waker and I kind wish I could've gotten the chance, way back win, to sail on a boat and kick butt in cel-shaded glory.

6. MUSICAL MONDAY! SKYRIM BARD RAPS!

I really loved the soundtrack of Skyrim, but I love fanmade stuff even more. This hilarious rap is just begging to be modded into the game and just adds another reason for me to cave in and get myself a PC copy of the game.

5. WORD OF THE DAY! 7/21/12. Evil twin.

Wario is one of my favorite characters in the Nintendo-verse because, not only is he pretty funny, but his games are also very well done and unique; whether its his platformers titles that are on par with any Mario game and, therefore, head and shoulders over most titles of the genre, and I enjoy Warioware titles far more than I ever enjoyed Mario Party.

4. WORD OF THE DAY! 7/16/12. Propane & Straight Man.

Hank Hill is a hero and his super power is dependability.

3. WORD OF THE DAY! 7/22/12. Journey.

I wanted to be the best, but it never was. Just to play the games, yeah that's my cause.

2. SCI-FI FANTASY SUNDAY! MY HORRIBLE STAR WARS! PT.1

I dunno how I feel about The Old Republic; certainly it is a decent MMO, and the experience was more in-depth/exciting than WoW, but at the end of the day I just want more Star Wars: Battlefront.

Not much to say about this one. Read it yourself, consider the facts and the film, and just remember, the film is still an amazing thing.

WTF WED. WORD OF THE DAY! 7/18/12. TOTORO: GOD OF DEATH THEORY

shinigami [shee-nee-gah-mee]
noun
1. Japanese mythology. "Death god" or "death spirit", it is an entity in Japanese folklore that is responsible for making sure a person dies at the appropriate time and guiding their spirit to judgement in the afterlife.

EX. There is a theory that beloved character, Totoro from Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro (1988), is in fact not the cuddly character we think and the story is far more macabre than first impressions would have you believe; Totoro might be a shinigami, a god of death.

Apologies before we begin to anyone who might be offended by the notion, but I'll try to put my own spin on the notion that might make it more comfortable. Before we begin how about a delightful look at Southpark's delightful Totoro Cthulhu parody.

WORD OF THE DAY! 6/27/12.

whimsy [hwim-zee]
noun
1. Capricious humor or disposition; extravagant, fanciful, or excessively playful expression.
2. An odd or fanciful notion.
3. Anything odd or fanciful; a product of playful or capricious fancy.
EX. As I talk about whimsy, you can check out this awesome Adventure Time x Miyazaki cross-over artwork from the link below. Make sure to check out his page if you like the art.

Every writer has things that make them tick and tock in a certain way; some of us are ticking away like a digital clock with computed precision and diligence, some of us write in small bursts like a stop watch, and then some of us are more like a cuckoo clock. I learned something a few years ago. I'm not exactly sure about the exact moment an adult writer realizes this about himself or whether he should accept it or fight it.; I am a cuckoo-clock, a whimsical writer.

I'm a young writer, but I think I might have some insights (regardless of how short-sighted they might be). First of all, to know a writer you must know two things: their influences and their motivations (often the same thing, but there ya go). My influences? The things that really matter to me? Aesthetically pleasing cartoons with good morals or good wit, video games (but especially Nintendo video games like Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past), tongue-in-cheek fantasy films like Flash Gordon, Labyritnth, Princess Bride, and Hook, beautiful and brilliant anime, especially that of Miyazaki, and, as for the writers who have influenced me most; Dr. Seuss who taught me how to be subtle in a silly world, Tolkein who taught me the simple pleasure of world-building, and Terry Pratchett.

Terry Pratchett taught me the value of creating a world of characters with their own stories to tell, the value of cleverly sprinkled satire, and how, under all the whipped cream of fantasy and humor, you can still create something that tells a universal truth. Terry Pratchett taught me that under all the whimsy, the fairy tales, and the wishes-upon-a-star, you can still have something sincere, serious, and another word starting with an 's'.
So, my influences have led me to use a mix of humor and drama to create interesting stories. So far, I hate to say or maybe I love it too, my best stories I've told have been done through the power of Dungeons and Dragons. Something about the spontaneity and the performance forced me to create world that were a tad goofy, plots a tad ridiculous, and yet, just right.
As for my motivations, I am still not 100% sure, but here is a short list.
1. Egotism- You can argue that this is a bad one to have, but I am pretty sure most writers are megalomaniacs.

2. Fantasy- I think a lot of writers write to put themselves, others, or fictional people in scenarios for their own amusement.

3. Enlightenment- Maybe I am trying to find some sort of truth?

And really, that's all I got for you guys. A little self-analysis to begin my Wednesday, followed by me playing some Zelda, going for a swim, and doing house chores. Maybe I'll make some magic cards or hang out with a friend later. Really, I should read a good book. But then again, as a cuckoo-clock, I am predictable, but always surprising.

MIXED BAG. POETRY JAM #1

As part of my goal to post at least two posts a day, I will be using a lot of mixed bag posts and do some more creative and random stuff. First, I'm posting a sample of my poetry that I wrote last Spring. I am an English/History double major and I love writing everything.

 I, CAT THE CONQUEROR
 By Sean Barnes

I, the Cheshire cat devour caged canaries-
In the night, I eat the baby's breath. Hush.
Death tastes like coddled cream. I eat too much.
So, sweet the sound of alley love. I blush.

I, Garfield in Sodom and Gomorrah-
Gluttonous. Never full. Purr.
Seconds, sevenths at dinner. I am no sinner.
I taw a fat puddy tat in the mirror!

I, the Catbus gobble little girls alive-
because I am not a robot. Myow.
Feels like drowning kittens in a bag, y'know?
The wet cat of infanticide. Can't take a joke?

I, Puss-in-Boots am a whoring troubadour-
clean as a politician. Meow.
I am going to run for President now.
Mouth! You talk and eat- and eat and talk, mouth!

I, Tom Cat will catch Jerry Mouse tomorrow-
Fast food, fast forward, fast damnation! Hiss.
French mice are filled with cowardice! Oui oui!
Bonjour! Monsieur Pussy Cat! Vis-à-vis!

The gilded cage of the canary taunted me so-
I was like Sylvester as I pounced. Gulp.
Her yellow feathers fell to the floor.
And so, Quoth the Canary, "Nevermore."
