NERDCULTURE SMACKDOWN! POKÉMON OF THE WEEK! JUNE 15- JUNE 21/13!

 #370 LUVDISC & #594 ALOMOMOLA

Trying to find the strength to write this article two weeks ago is what led to me going on a break from the blog...but here goes nothing. Last time, we covered some rather delightful cottonweed cuties, but this week we've got another pair of boring lovey dovey water Pokémon that I couldn't give less of a crap about... #370 Luvdisc and #594 Alomomola.

LAST WEEK'S POKÉMON OF THE WEEK: #187 HOPPIP, #188 SKIPLOOM, & #189 JUMPLUFF

WORD OF THE DAY! 6/14/13!

"Murder your darlings"
idiom
1. The popular writer's addage coined by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, in his published series of lectures from Cambridge, On the Art of writing, that summarizes the held-fast advice that authors must be willing to kill their characters, even if they don't want to and they know the audience will have a negative reaction, because the narrative can become stronger through the resulting drama and intrigue.

EX. The first story I wrote for a college workshop was not very good. In fact, to be perfectly honest, I still don't think I've written a story that I would put in the "good" category. A couple of my stories are satisfactory, but, back the to the subject at hand, my first story was not even satisfactory. And yet, I believe I learned something from the experience.

I don't wish to give too much away in case I wind up reworking the flaccid bit of drama and commentary that I called "Little Things", but here is a synopsis. An old man, named David, and his wife go on a trip to Florida. Despite his wife's objections, David insists on going out to golf despite the warnings of violent storms on the way. He ignores all precautions and warning signs, until it was too late. David is with lightning and dies shortly after. I took a whole page to describe all of the moment in a heart-beat. I murdered David.

Not only did I murder him. I murdered him callously. I murdered him to show the readers the error in his ways. I don't regret murdering David. I regret murdering him to prove a point. I don't think you forget the first character that you murder. And that's okay. I regret how I went about it and I regret that David was difficult to like, but I don't regret murdering him. After I murdered David, I knew I could murder other characters I created (and that's sorta like murdering yourself...so spooky, right?).

A lot of people say they've quit Game of Thrones after George Martin murdered some more of his darlings. I know that he had his reasons for doing it and he didn't just do it to prove a point/for shock value. He did it for a variety of reasons that, I believe, will prove to pay off. And that's why I keep watching and that's why I keep reading.

Maybe next season I'll be caught up in reading the books and maybe you should too. I'd trust the guy that helped invent wookiees. Feel free to read some of his own writing tips.

WORD OF THE DAY! 6/13/13!

multitudinous [muhl-tuh-tood-ih-nus]
adjective
1. Forming a multitude or great number; existing, occurring, or present in great numbers; very numerous.
2. Comprising many items, parts, or elements.
3. Archaic. Crowded or thronged.

EX. Alright, we're here to talk about the multitudinous news from this week's E3 conference on the upcoming Pokémon X & Y. WTF WED! GAME GRUMPS: THE MOVIE: THE TRAILER: THE SEQUEL!

 WTF WEDNESDAY PRESENTS

First up, we've got two Game Grumps: The Movie trailers from GregzillaGT. His animation isn't the absolute best I've seen from the Grumpinators, BUT the amount of detail, work, and character he manages to put into the first video is pretty awesome. All grumplings should be able to appreciate this and everyone else might find this to create a lot of questions they can only solve by watching GAME GRUMPS.

The sequel is eve more intense and pulls in various characters and comrades of the grumps from all over the youtubes and their lives. In the image above, we can see.... in the front row, Jacques the Parrot (far left), Kirby (right of Jacques), Arin Hanson AKA Egoraptor (right of Kirby), and Jon Jafari AKA Jontron (right of Egoraptor). In the next row, the Continue Guys (far left), Grant Kirkhope the Composer of Banjo Kazooie (in the very back), Peanut Butter Gamer (in front of Grant Kirkhope dressed as Link), The Completionist AKA Jirard Khalil AKA "Beardman" AKA Shirraco the Laser Clown (standing to the right of Peanut Butter Gamer) and next to the clown we have his  next to him is his loyal sidekick, Greg "BEARS!" Wilmot. Also, tucked behind the gear that Jontron is holding, is Soozy Goose

And last, but not least, is a sweaty glistening game grumps parody from the twisted labratory of Speedosausage. It has some commentary about the recent absence of Jontron and Egoraptor on their respective channels...in their defense...um...they didn't post that often before Game Grumps.

WORD OF THE DAY! 6/12/13!

construction paper [kun-struhk-shun-pehy-per]
noun
1. A paper made with heavy groundwood, in a variety of colors and sizes, for making posters, cut-outs, and other craft projects.

EX. I love construction paper. I make all my custom cards with construction paper. There is something nostalgic about the material. We all used it in school, when we were kids, because it was colorful, could stand up to more rough handling, and was less likely to give you a paper cut (I totally just imagined that third reason, but my paranoid nature deems it to make sense). Who else loves the feel oh having a box of markers, a pair of scissors, and nothing but your imagination to guide you on a journey through a construction paper universe?

MUSICAL MON! THE WAY I FEEL ABOUT THE YEAR OF LUIGI IS WRONG!

Nobody knows how I feel... what sane person would continue a blog this unsuccessful after pumping out articles that almost no one reads for a year and a half of half-baked articles about Game Grumps and Pocket Monsters and Magic the Gatherings and Dungeons and Dragons and Nothing. But I will continue on for the same reason a salmon swims upstream...

...because he knows at the end of the day, he'll always end up buying a new Nintendo console eventually ever since those Japanese demons sunk their fangs into his flesh with their Game Boy and SNES and have been slowly draining him of his youth and genius for two decades. You may think it is a waste of time, that it is no use, that this generation of video game consoles is about to coming crashing down around our ears but...

...YOU'RE WRONG! I'm a sentimental optimist and I think that is just the beginning of a new generation that will begin a bright new age of challenges and entertainment to gamers young and old, male and female, and everything on every part of the spectrum. Microsoft will redeem itself, Sony will continue to strive to compete, and Nintendo will keep on Nintnedoing. That is the way it has been and the way it shall be.

P.S. F#@% the OUYA. If I wanna play android games, I would. But they all suck. If you've ever purposely played a cell phone (besides in a situation like sitting on a bus or in a car or in a waiting room) game rather than play a console/PC game, read a book, or played with your hair instead...you disgust me.

"L'OREAL! BECAUSE YOU'RE WORTH IT!"

WORD OF THE DAY! 6/10/13!

noncombatant [non-kom-bat-unt]
noun
1. A person connected with a military force in some capacity other than that of a fighter, as a surgeon or chaplain.
2. A person who is not directly involved in combat; a civilian in wartime.
adjective
3. Not constituting, designed for, or engaged in combat.

EX. Regardless of who think is winning ground fastest in the console wars right now (it's clearly Playstation 4, followed by Wii-U, and with Xbox One make itself the villain for the moment), we should all be able to agree that the Ouya is about as much a noncombatant in the war of the big three as the Apple's Pippin 2. Just google Pippin. You'll have a good laugh.
