WORD OF THE DAY! 11/1/13!

goosebumps [goos-bumps]
noun
1. Rough condition of the skin, resembling that of a plucked goose, induced by cold or fear; horripilation.

EX. HEY! I hope dat got your attenshun. Today's word of the day is L. R. Stein, um, wait, I mean R. L. Stine...well no, actually, it's about the TV series based on his popular children's book horror series and, technically, it about Jontron doing some vidjas pointing out the ineptitude of a couple of particularly bad episodes of Goosebumps.

I know I had goosebumps when I saw his name in my youtube subscription feed!

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/29/13!

X ALL THE Y/THINGS
meme
1.  An exploitable cartoon used to make a hyperbolic statement about performing an object.

EX. This game has everything. Therefore, it would leave us nothing. No lives left to live. No things left to thing. And yet, with each new game release, some over-the-top and selfish gamers will...

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/28/13!

picaresque [pik-uh-resk]
adjective
1. Of or pertaining to the characteristics of a form or subgenre of prose fiction, originally developed in 16th Century Spain and flourishing throughout Europe, depicting, sometimes in satire and sometimes in a realistic fashion, in humorous detail the adventures of a roguish hero taking part in a series of episodes depicting the often over the top parody of the every day life of the common people.
2. Or of pertaining to rogues.

EX.  Wes Anderson is one of my favorite filmmakers; his uniquely quaint but fanciful, subtle but over-the-top, and blunt but whimsical works are masterfully crafted by the use of sets and costumes constructed out of picture books and old photographs into a mural of styles that somehow seem timeless and simultaneously tied to various times and places of the 20th Century. His cinematography, with sweeping single shot cuts of the scenery and characters to well-narrated vignettes meant to quickly and humorously characterize a moment or feeling, cast always brilliantly with quirky and loveable actors, creates a picaresque ride for the audience that leaves them with a sense of joy in the hero's muffled triumph and a sense of ennui that one's life is often separated from the romantic adventures that Anderson's heroes embark upon.

It's not for everyone, but I love his films like I love a yellow-papered hardback given to me by an elderly professor that bonded with me over a discussion on Early Modern European spy networks and the inner life of Thomas More's contemporaries.

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/27/13! POKÉBLOG X #3

colleague [kol-eeg]
noun
1. A fellow worker, associate, or member of a staff, department, profession, etc.

EX. Alright, so we've talked a little about my core team of Pokémon and my thoughts on EXP share, now let's talk about the entourage of colleagues, made up of friends, rivals, and hanger-ons, that you meet in X & Y.

Your friends actually give you and your next-door neighbor rival (if you chose the male protagonist, Serena & if you chose the female protagonist, Callum) your starters. Your rival is an extremely ambitious but friendly person with the same ambition as your main character to be a Pokémon Master & the Champion of the Kalos region. Now, let's look at the losers from Vaniville...

Shauna is the bubbliest of your friends in pretty much any Pokémon game and, like you, is looking for a dream to call her own. So far, I haven't discovered much more about her, other than that she really does genuinely find every new experience to be special. On an unrelated note, her hair has some Pokémon-like qualities... That's odd.

Trevor's goal is to catch and catalog of Kalos's Pokémon for Professor Sycamore's research. He is the typical studious nerd of the group that is really serious and focused, but apt to have little anxiety attacks from his lack of social skills. Also, IS HIS HAIR A POKÉMON OR A HELMET!?

And here is Tierno and-- OH C'MON! HIS HAIR IS SO A POKÉMON?! AMIRITE!?-- back to the usual program... Tierno's goal in life is to create the world's greatest team of dancing Pokémon. He is a terrible trainer because he is easily distracted by movement. Also, he has one of the least popular Pokémon of all time on his shirt. As much as I like fat guy characters, since fatties are underrepresented in video games and anime, Tierno is, undoubtedly, kind of a loser.

Soon, we'll talk about some of the adult friends you meet in Kalos who're all, almost inarguably, more interesting and cool than your friends starting out on their journeys. At least, your friends are not the biggest losers in Kalos...

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/26/13!

adulterate [ad-uhl-teh-rehyt]
verb
1. To debase or make impure by adding inferior materials or elements; use cheaper, inferior, or less desirable goods in the production of (any professedly genuine article).

EX. I don't wanna adulterate the process of writing my articles, but sometimes I just gotta do what I gotta do to put out content.

Whose blog do you think you're reading right now? Whose blog do you think you read? Do you know how many articles I write a year? I mean, even if I told you, you wouldn't believe it. Do you know what would happen if I suddenly decided to stop getting online? A blog that practically noone reads would go belly up. Disappears! It ceases to exist without me. No, you clearly don't know whose blog you're reading, so let me clue you in. My blog is not ending, reader. My blog IS the ending. A guy opens his browser and looks up the Pokémon bible and you think that guy is me? No. I am the one who blogs!

I'M THE ONE WHO BLOGS!!

P.S. Still haven't seen the last season or finale of Breaking Bad.

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/25/13!

substitute [sub-stuh-toot]
noun
1. A replacement for a person or thing.
2. Pokémon. A Normal-type move, normally taught through TM 50 in Gen I & TM 90 in IV, V, VI, that takes 25% of the HP of the user to create a dummy with that HP and 1 additionally HP that blocks all incoming damage for the user until it is destroyed.
verb
2. To replace a person or thing with an alternative.
adjective
3. Describing something that replaced a person or thing.

EX. On days like these, where I'm trying to type up a few articles in the few hours I have before going to bed early to prepare for overnight shift, I really wish I could find a substitute blogger. Much like the use of the move Substitute, it might be very effective in making me more competitive.

In fact, Substitute users are some of the most frustrating opponents in the metagame. You just need a Pokémon with a move that heals it's own health and/or Leftovers to set up a rather annoying situation for your opponent. Combined with status effects and effective moves to damage your foes, a Pokémon using Substitute can become an annoying roadblock and/or sweeper for your team.

For example, a Gengar with Substitute can switch in, put down a blocking doll, and the proceed to Focus Punch, Thunderbolt, and Ice Punch its way to victory.

What do you think? Would it be wrong of me to use a substitute writer on my blog? Would it still be the same blog? Would it taste like real blog butter?

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/12/13! NERDCULTURE SMACKDOWN! POKÉMON X & Y UPDATE! #4

check out [chekt-owt]
verb
1. To leave somewhere, especially a hotel or other lodging, after paying.
2. To rent or borrow an object from a person, collection, store, etc.
3. To examine or research an object, person, persons, or any sort of subject.
4. To quit, give up on, or emotionally/physically disconnect from a person, persons, group, organization, project, or responsibility.
5. Slang. To die.

EX. Pictured above are the exclusives to each respective 6th Generation Pokémon we know of...so far. I would give my opinion on it in more detail, like how I'm stoked to get a hold of Aggron, Starmie and Clauncher but I'm bummed to not be able to get Heracross and Tyranitar without trading, but I don't really care that much. Why? Because I'm checked out. Because X & Y come out today and I wrote this on Friday!

Despite that, I have a quick announcement before the last update before the release; I will continue my X & Y updates but, instead, I will be doing a weekly article about my experiences with the game in a fashion that recounts the high points and low points of the game. If I'm feeling froggy, I may write a review soon, but don't put your money on it cuz I'm checked out. Anywho, let's get to the update...

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/11/13!

pageantry [paj-uhn-tree]
noun
1. A spectacular display; pomp.
2. A mere show or empty display.

EX. There has been a lot of build-up to Pokémon X & Y. It comes out on Saturday and, as we hit the end stretch, I gotta turn on anyone who hasn't seen all the pageantry to check out POKÉMON: THE ORIGIN on Nov. 15th or find yourself the subtitled episodes on youtube.

Also, if you're wondering about the pageantry above, maybe you haven't seen....THIS?!

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/10/13!

jinx [jeenks]
noun
1. A person, idea, or thing that brings bad luck.
2. An exclamation used when two or more people say the same word at the same time. Until this silly game is resolve, the individuals who were "jinxed" cannot speak until they meet a specific criteria such as someone saying their name or buying the "jinxer" a Coke.
verb
2. To bring bad luck or to curse someone.
3. To destroy the point of an action or idea.

EX. The NuFu clan and implejr (that's me) have their differences; for example, several of them hold superstitions and I , for a number of reasons ranging from my skeptical nature to controlling my own neurosis & OCD, take a, at the best of times, optimistic and/or, at the worst of times, sadistic pleasure in ignoring, arguing, or even mocking such silliness. For example, in a game of Summoner's Rift on LoL (That's "League of Legends" for the uninitiated), I might say something like, "I think we're turning this around, guys!"

Now, when I say this on the fly and not to pester them, I say optimistic stuff to give myself a little boost of confidence and hopefully reassure my teammates. And yet... when they hear this, they groan and say that "I'm jinxing them." As someone who doesn't believe in such silly superstition, as much as someone who is a member of a species as illogical as our own can be, I'll even admit I believed in Santa Claus far past the point of appropriate suspension of disbelief and have participated in theatre superstition, I usually have a little friendly laugh at their frustration. This sort of disrespectful behavior reminds me of the newest champion coming to League of Legends...

Here we've got a fun new champ that falls right into my playstyle of dealing damage at a distance and being able to escape in a hurry with the most petty psychopath to ever terrorize Piltover, Jinx.

The champion was first teased in the log-in screen splash for the Pool Party Update (not the arm with the pink bullet and blue smoke tattoos)  and then Vi's page was vandalized by a mysterious X figure. I've actually talked about Vi and Piltover in a previous article about my favorite ADC and the Sheriff of Piltover, Caitlyn.Well, it seem that our newest champ, #166 or, in roman numerals CVIX ("C" for Caitlyn, "VI" for Vi, and "X" for Jinx) is the sort of super criminal that Piltover not only deserves but needs. After all, what would Batman be without the Joker?

Jinx's full history is a bit of a mystery, but here's the official lore: both Caitlyn and VI, partners in fighting crime, have been teased by a villain with the calling card of "X". Starting a crime spree legendary enough to get her admission into the League of Legends, Jinx earned her name through the chaos that follows in her wake and put Piltover's finest to the test. She seems to take particular pleasure in frustrating Vi, whom she calls "Fat Hands", and, after destroying the Piltover treasury with Vi inside, to add insult to the literal injuries that Vi suffered, Jinx left a simple note: "You'll never catch me!"

As with any champion, Jinx has her inspirations in fiction and the real world; a punk girl aesthetic mixed with themes and elements of the Joker & Harley Quinn(Dark Knight graffiti, pale skin, make-up, laughter, petite femme fatale with a rocket launcher), Gollum (she talks to her rocket launcher, Fishbones), and Helen Bonham Carter (there is a certain Tim Burtonesque mania about her features).

As for her kit, they might as well have called her the "Glass Cannon" because she is all about dealing damage, kiting, disengaging, reengaging, and clean-up. Her passive "GET EXCITED!" gives her a massive but temporary speed boost every time she kills or assists in killing a foe or turret. This allows her to chase down and kill weak opponents, as well as flee in a pinch. Her Q "Switcheroo!" allows her to switch her autoattacks between a short-ranged but fast firing minigun, Pow-Pow, for dueling and a long-ranged rocket launcher, Fishbones, for AOE crit mayhem, giving her a lot of flexibility in fights. Her W "Zap!" is a long range skillshot that reveals the first opponent struck and slows them, which is great for escaping or chasing down foes. Her E "Flame Chompers!" fires three mines that, if stepped on by an opponent, blow up, and root them to allow her to catch or an escape other champs in a pinch or set up team fights. Her Ult "Super Mega Death Rocket!" is a global rocket she can fire that flies in a straight line, hitting the first enemy champ in it's path, and blowing up for massive AOE damage. This allows her to finish off opponents and, the best part, is the farther they travel, the more damage they do.

Jinx is a champ I'll definitely be picking up ASAP. After all, even a Neutral Good sap like me can get into a bit of spastic chaos every now and then. Plus, I can't say no to a super villainess who talks to her guns. DeadpoolxJinx OTP!

P.S. JINX! DOUBLE-JINX! TRIPLE DOUBLE-DOGGY DARE JINX! JINX LOG-IN SCREEN!

C'mon and join the mayhem.

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/9/13!

mirror match [mir-er-mach]
noun
1. Video game.  A term for a multiplayer match or simulation in which both opposing sides are the same character, characters, or group of characters.

EX. Mirror matches have, in League of Legends, been only a 1 on 1 match-up because in blind pick you can only have one of a single character on each team and in draft pick matches things become even more strict with only one copy of a character between both team. This meant that, while some players have wanted to see what would happen in a 5 V 5 match between all Ashes, Luxes, Blitzcranks, etc, such dream matches were impossible...

...until the other day when some people started to discover they could create buggy, difficult, but functional matches in custom games that allow you to pull of this feat. Check out the response from Riot, HERE. It seems we've got a new mode to look forward to in the near future but, for now, I'll have to see if I can get into a Teemo match the tricky way.

You should also check out Dunkey's experiences in these "dupe matches" in the link below.

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/8/13!

yep [yep]
adverb, noun
1. Yes.

virality [vahy-ral-ih-tee]
noun
1. The tendency of an image, video, piece of information, or idea to be circulated rapidly and widely throughout the Internet, from user to user; the quality of being viral.

EX. In King of the Hill, "yep" is often used as a term of satisfaction. In Poké-King-of-the-Mon-Hill!, there is a whole lot of yep in the crossover I have been waiting to see since the Hills went to Japan and discovered Hank has a half-Japanese brother that makes robot parts and robot accessories.

The fact that this video is going to ride on a wave of shares into the upper echelons of web virality thanks to it's perfect storm of riding the Pokémon X & Y/Origins hype bandwagon and the depravity of viewers like me and you. Also, El Cid really outdid himself with this one. Congrats and "BIRD!"

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/7/13!

RAM [ram]
noun
1. Acronym. "Random-access memory"; computer memory available to the user for creating, loading, or running programs and for the temporary storage and manipulation of data, in which time of access to each item is independent of the storage sequence. As a storage medium, RAM is volatile, so its contents are lost when the power fails or is turned off.

EX. How much RAM does your computer hold, random internet nerd? I hold an entire flock of Ferpinshire Grey Wools hostage under the hood of my desktop. Sometimes, especially when I play games on Ultra High quality, you can hear them screaming. Ssstttsstt.

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/4/13!

cat burglar [kat-bur-gler]
noun
1. A burglar who breaks into buildings by climbing through upstairs windows, across roofs, etc., especially with great stealth and agility.

EX. After watching the entirety of the Batman the Animated series, I still find the DC Universe's greatest cat burglar to be, at best, a somewhat odd and selfish, self-righteous vigilante/crook and, at worst, a complete crazy catlady.

Also, sometimes I need to take a knock at cats. Between T.S. Eliot, Broadway, & the Internet, we've put them up on a pedestal. THIS (below) is how we used to treat our feline villains (and now I don't mean you should hit your cat, pretty much ever, take a joke(pretty sure it's a puppet)).

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/3/13!

balefire [behyl-fahyer]
noun
1. A large fire out in the open; a bonfire.
2. A signal fire, shot, or beacon.
3. A funerary pyre.

EX. This is a balefire, a signal, a sign that the folks making X & Y are listening; not only do they release an intense new Pokémon anime but a new Megaevolution form for Charizard. Not just a new form, but the form we wanted and we (and he) deserve. Mega Charizard X is a Fire/Dragon type with the ability Tough Claws to enhance his physical contact moves.

I'm so glad I preordered X. The only downside? Do I neglect Mega Torchic and use Mega Charmander as my fire starter (this will be the first gen I know I'm not picking a fire starter from Gen 6)? Hm... maybe the other starters will have alternate mega evolutions that are just as badass as Mega Charizard X? Only time, spoilers, (and more leaks) will tell.

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/2/13!

herculean [her-kyoo-lee-uhn]
adjective
1. Something requiring the strength of Hercules, or other considerable power, to accomplish.
2. Having enormous strength, size, power, etc.
3. Of or pertaining to labors of Hercules.

EX. It sure seemed like a herculean effort for JonTron to finally get around to posting a new video for the "Season 2 of JonTron" he promises us, amirite!? But seriously, jk, this video is a return to form for our master of the whimsical video game review in the format of a theme montage of mostly monstrous games based on the Greek mythic hero, Hercules.

If you need another reason to get excited... JonTron dances.

Also, "Who put the 'glad' in gladiator?" is an obnoxious anachronism that has no place in the Disney's Hercules film, which has plenty worse anachronism, because gladiators... ARE ROMAN!
