WTF WED! COMMANDER SHEPHERD IN WES ANDERSON'S ATTACK ON TITAN!

I played the same character throughout my playthroughs of Mass Effect 1 to 3. Sean Shepherd is a Vanguard. I enjoyed the mix of guns and telekinetic gameplay that allowed me to manipulate my opponents and focus my guns on particularly volatile targets. To be honest, I was under the impression I chose wrong... until Mass Effect 3.

Not only could I pick up a sniper rifle and therefore eliminate any negatives when it came to my weapons, but, as part of combat in general becoming even more dynamic and enjoyable, biotic charge received a big boost. And you better believe I maxed an ability that allowed me to zoom to any target and knock them down and often off of a railing.

It made me feel like a gun-wielding jedi.

Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors. Seriously, if you haven't seen his work, try a few of his films out. My favorites are Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Moonrise Kingdom.

So, what have I done in my week's absence? Nothing.

What have I done in the last four days? I attended my aunt's graduation from college, I hung out the next day and watched movies and the like with my friend Justin, then I forgot my best friend's birthday on Monday and had to redeem myself (bought him Fire Emblem on the 3DS and hung out with him), spent the next day playing League of Legends, and today I've hung out with my best friend, recorded a fun new Let's Play session, and have started working on a new D & D setting.

Life is in stalls and starts and leaps and bounds.

WEEKLY ROUND-UP! 3/11-3/17/13!

WEEKLY ROUND-UP PRESENTS

7. POKÉMON OF THE WEEK! #434 STUNKY & #435 SKUNTANK

I know I gave these butt-faced skunks a lot of guff, but this cartoony rendering of Skuntank is growing on me... He just looks like such a grumpy little munchkin.

6. WORD OF THE DAY! 3/14/13! Grunt.

On that note, I suppose there are worse Pokémon to be paired with as a Team Rocket grunt than Stunky but I'd prefer something with a little more bite. What Poison or Dark Pokémon would you want to have as your evil starter?

5. WORD OF THE DAY! 3/17/13! Monorail.

Flashback: The second Word of the Day article I did for DSF was Simpsons-themed and included "cromulent" and "embiggen"! Check it out HERE!

4. MUSICAL MON! BOOMHAUER'S SONOVOX VS. TALI: QUARIAN DISNEY PRINCESS!

"Harumph. How can you read this? Where are the gun specs?"

3. WORD OF THE DAY! 3/13/13! Comeback.

I got some good mileage out of the Pokémon anime lately (but I don't really watch it which sorta feels like cheating).

2. WTF WED! MY LITTLE SPANISH SWIMMING PONY ANIME DS!

I was pretty proud of everything I talked about in this article that truly embodied a variety of WTF-- from plain old pony WTF to offensive WTF to cultural WTF. Good stuff.

1. MIXED BAG. CAVE STORY REVIEW!

Cave Story has probably lodged itself in the echelon of games that, rather than be a footnote in my game catalog, will stand the test of time and be something I go back to every two or three years. Like Super Mario Galaxy 1/2, Twilight Princess, Halo, etc. Also, if you haven't figured it out yet... CAVE STORY IS FREE! CLICK HERE! Download the game and the English Language Pack and start playing it ASAP.

MUSICAL MON! BOOMHAUER'S SONOVOX VS. TALI: QUARIAN DISNEY PRINCESS!

MUSICAL MONDAY PRESENTS

First up in our Monday injection of musical marinade into your earholes is a delightful King of the Hill remix. It takes the wise words of Boomhauer and turns them into a gamboling tune(since most of his wisdom seems to come from song lyrics and the like). My favorite part is the classic response from Hank that came to color is personality more than all the rage of the early seasons when he says, "Well, that's what we tell ourselves. Isn't it, Boomhauer?"

Next on the roster is a lovely shot of nostalgia from brentalfloss's chum Dave Bulmer with a look at an album that haunts (for better or worse) his childhood. The video comes with a little history about a piece of audio equipment you might not have heard of, the Sonovox, which simulates an instrument's sound into words-- something simultaneously creepy and fascinating-- and is strewn with a sense of genuine nostalgia on the part of our host as he talks about Sparky's Magic Piano. Enjoy.

Last but not least, we got a Disney Princess-like song sung by everyone's (well, at least amongst my friends) favorite romantic partner in the Mass Effect series, Tali vas Normandy. The scene is from the latest DLC for Mass Effect 3 and, if I may say so, is an "adorkable" moment between Shepherd and Tali.

WEEKLY ROUND-UP! 1/14-1/20/13.

WEEKLY ROUND-UP PRESENTS

7. WORD OF THE DAY! 1/16/13. Gainfully

I was sick last week, but this week it seems like everything is coming up Goldar!

I think everyone is pretty hyped for the new Pokemon games for 3DS-- I will hopefully post updates for X & Y as quickly as they materialize.

Is "gorily" a word? I don't think its a word. Maybe it should be a word?

4. WORD OF THE DAY! 1/19/13. Earn.

I finally beat Mass Effect 3. I got the ending I wanted and, while I agree that the three-door ending was crap, I think the anger directed towards the game was probably more than it deserved and, I think if you ignore the ending, it is easily a 5/5 title.

3. WORD OF THE DAY! 1/15/13. Handicraft.

I felt like sharing some of my own handicrafts for you guys by showing off the X-Mas cards I made for my friends. Some can be a little sappy, but there is nothing that I am more grateful for than my friends & family.

2. WTF WED! HOARDERS: POKEMON EDITION!

Pokemon is something that I love, but it also torments me so. I've accepted that Pokemon is about the fun and not about "catching 'em all."

1. MIXED BAG. PODCAST #5 EVIL DEAD LOCALIZED GEORGE LUCAS!

We finally got to post the fifth Mixed Bag Podcast. The topics were the new Evil Dead film trailer, anime localization, and Disney buying Lucasfilm.

WORD OF THE DAY! 1/19/13.

earn [urn]
verb
1. To gain or get in return for one's labor or service.
2. To merit as compensation, as for service; to deserve.
3. To acquire through merit.
4. To gain as due return or profit.

EX. I think that this little comic is pretty interesting bit of commentary on the difference between core and hardcore gaming; for one, it would be easy for some to jump to the conclusion that the comic is simply critical of "hardcore" gaming, which appears to involve a lot more violence, in comparison to the the "casual" experience, in which "fun" (and all that "fun" entails) is handed to the gamer on a silver platter. But, that would be just the shallowest gleaning of the comic, that I made the first time I saw it.

The comic is actually a decent definition of the difference between these two types of gaming; casual gaming is defined by how easy it is to enjoy. You start the game, play it until you're done having fun, and that's the experience. It is fine, but not fantastic. Hardcore gaming, on the other hand, is not as easy to enjoy. Sometimes you have to fight past something frustrating or stressful, overcoming an obstacle of some sort, to get to the best part of the experience. And because that experienced feels earned, it is more enjoyable and the impact has a longer lasting effect.

To simplify the difference: I love Tetris. But Tetris doesn't give me confidence or change my philosophy. It helps my critical thinking and distracts me, kills time, when I play it. Mass Effect 3 on Insanity isn't always fun. It can be really hard. It can be frustrating. It can even make you curse as your character is beaten to death by a little bug. But when you work hard, when you earn your way to the next checkpoint, and when you complete the story, that satisfaction can last a lifetime.

P.S. Because this is probably just a way for me to fill three paragraphs and doesn't go into enough depth to satisfy my more discerning readers, um... rainbows will defeat the Reapers!

WORD OF THE DAY! 9/29/12.

SOURCE FOR IMG 1
mass effect [mas-ih-fekt]
noun
1. Mass Effect video game series. The effects of a field created through the manipulation of element zero, via an electric current via dark energy, to increase the mass of space-time. A positive charge increases mass and a negative charge decreases mass. The strength of the current affects the magnitude of the dark energy mass effect, i.e. the greater the current the greater the dark energy mass effect. This energy also creates a static charge of electricity that, unless dispersed, and cause massive damage to the producer of the energy. The energy is used in all fields of science, from the creation of new elements and materials to the evolution of high speed travel, and those with biotic talents can sense and manipulate these fields with varying effects.

EX. Let me start by getting this out of the way, I haven't played Mass Effect 3 yet but, even supposing the end of the trilogy was ruined at the last minute, that doesn't change a simple fact; Mass Effect is one of the most potentially lucrative and interesting video game franchises of this generation and easily the best science fiction series and role playing game series of this generation.
SOURCE OF IMG 2-4
Few games, if any since I can't think of any, could compare the perfect mix of role-playing, action game play, and cinematic story-telling that makes Mass Effect fascinating. Partially, this achieved through the technical heights that the series reached, improving between each game and pushing this generation's console hardware to the limits, to give us something that is, in my opinion, visually and audibly unchallengeable. The experience is enhanced by the voice over of all dialogue, with a variety of voices and characters, that give the Milky Way and its enemies depth. The game elements are engaging, rarely tedious, and increasingly functional to build a paramount gaming experience.

Now, while the technical elements allow for the proper tools to tell the story of Mass Effect, what is even more important is the skillful story-telling they do with those tools. The game mixes the best themes and elements of science fiction, from the intellectual altruism and character drama of Star Trek to the epic fantasy and kinetic action of Star Wars. They built a galaxy filled with incredible alien races, amazing locations, and threats, ancient and new alike, for you to overcome. The greatest genius of the story-telling is your unique version of Commander Shepard and his/her relationship with the party of comrades you earn through your adventures. They each fulfill different archetypes, with different agendas and story to unfold, and they really grow on you.

The genius of Mass Effect is all of these elements coming together in a way that appeals to casual player and hardcore critic alike; the series isn't just another sci-fi shooter, but a step in the right direction toward making video games an important genre in fiction. If the first and second Mass Effects could make me care so much about Garus, Wrex, and Tali, as much as I've ever cared about Spock, Han Solo, and Hermione Granger, I can easily imagine the next generation of media set in the Mass Effect universe to become the next great frontier of interactive media.

WORD OF THE DAY! 4/12/12.

futurology [fyoo-chuh-rol-uh-jee]
noun
1. the study or forecasting of trends or developments of science, technology, politics, the social structure, etc.

EX.As a believer in futurology, and the experts who work in the field, I am excited about the prospect of wearing shoes that are molded to the already impressive human bipedal feet and an AR monocle, as soon as they make one styled like a Dragon Ball Z scouter.
