WORD OF THE DAY! 12/24/14! (LOL)

Snowdown Showdown [snow-down-snoh-down]
noun
1. League of Legends. The annual seasonal event in League of Legends that as come every Winter since 2009. The event has a heavy winter theme, with a focus on snow/ice themes & Christmas themes, usually involving a snowy paint of coat on a map/s, gifting events, special bundles, legacy skins, special sales, and other promotions.

Last year's Snowdown Showdown skins were pretty great.

This year we got a poro themed game mode, Legend of the Poro King and a whole new slew of special legacy skins and icons.

Here are the amaze-balls icons:

I have them all. A cool note? If you equip the Snowdown Poro icons, directly above, before playing Legend of the Poro King, your poros will be especially skinned in those five themes.

And now, let's look at the three Snowdown Showdown 2014 skins...

Orianna is both a beautiful and sad character to begin with (she is a robot made by a father to replace his deceased daughter) and there is something haunting about this skin. The graceful animations, the sharp textures giving it an ornament like quality, and those piercings eyes make this a unique skin. The only mark I can take against it is that the Poro deathball, while cute, detracts from the character's themes a little too much. Maybe a giant snowflake would've been better? Fragile, beautiful, and fleeting. 4/5.

Poro minions are going to make this my default skin for Malzahar but, much like the Winter Ops themed Varus skin, I feel like the snow mask and other winter gear don't feel especially unique to the character. 4/5.

This is pretty much the perfect skin for me; Sejuani is decked out in a snow going outfit that perfectly compliments the pink cheeks and tongue of her mount and, as her mount is a giant poro and her weapon is a poro snack on the end of a leash, I am smitten with this perfect Snowdown skin. 5/5.

What do you guys think?

WORD OF THE DAY! 12/18/14! (LoL)

poro ball [pohr-oh-bawl]
noun
1. A poro projectile thrown as part of the summoner spell "poro toss" to deal damage, slow, and apply an effect that allows the thrower to zoom over to the hit target for a short period of time.

EX. I love poros! But I also love poro ball!

(As some have taken to calling the new "Legend of the Poro King" game mode).

Last year, we all celebrated, with childish glee, the Snowdown Showdown mode (I as much as everyone with several articles) and this year Riot pulls out the stops with a new game mode set on Howling Abyss where your summoner spells are replaced by Poro Toss, which allows you to toss poro balls, and To the King, which allows you to pull yourself to the Poro King. What's that? Who's the Poro King?

Oh, well, when your team makes ten contacts with your enemy, you summon the powerful building destroying Poro King! This makes this mode a mad dash to get 10 hits first and then to protect/destroy the king, depending on who controls him, as he makes his merry march towards the enemy Nexus.

I may be biased, because I love poros, but this is a pretty fun game mode. My favorite moment has been getting a quadrakill as Vel'Koz (who is now disabled) by using Poro Toss to hit a Lee Sin, watch him kick to safety, and then pulling to him to kill him and his teammates with a well-placed face-melting ult. Stay tuned for the next couple of days for articles on the Poro ward skins/icons and the new Snowdown 2014 skins (they all include poros in some form)!

WORD OF THE DAY! 9/18/14! (LOL UPDATE!)

ascension [uh-sehn-shun]
noun
1. Mythology. A figure or object rising into the heavens or to a higher form of existence.
2. To move, climb, or go up.
3. To rise to a higher point, level, or position; to be promoted or become superior.

EX. That's right chumps! Another new League of Legends champion has been released less than a month after Gnar the Missing Link (a shocking development). Furthermore, it is a champ that has been rumored and anticipated for a year or two. So, without much further ado, besides mentioning the fact this is the first piece of rebuilding League of Legends lore, let's take a look at Azir, Emperor of the Sands!
Cassiopeia hired Sivir and her band of mercenaries to explore the ancient ruins of Shurima and slip past Nasus, the Curator of the Sands, unhindered. As she neared the pay-off of her journey, Cassiopeia showed little or no concern as Sivir's men died, one by one, to the traps in their path. By the time they reached the vault containing the Ascended, all but Sivir and Cassiopeia had fallen prey to insidious defenses within the tomb, and yet they did not falter from the doors barring them entrance to that which they sought.

As they approached the stone serpent guardian that stood at the doors of the vault, Cassiopeia betrayed Sivir and stole her blade as the key to open the vault. The statue came to life, set upon Cassiopeia, and its venom burned her flesh and spirit, twisting her with its ancient curse. Sivir could only watch as Renekton, Butcher of the Sands, turned mad by his imprisonment, and Xerath, the Magus Ascendant, architect of Shurima's destruction and his own madness, escaped to sow chaos once again.

As Sivir lay on the floor of the tomb, dying from her wounds, her blood soaked into the sands. An ancient magic stirred and Sivir, the last descendant of Azir, a resurrection stirred. Azir rose from his slumber and, recognizing Sivir as his own blood, he carried her to the Oasis of the Dawn. Laying her in the waters, he saved her life, and finally, after years of being denied the glory, achieved ascension and can return Shurima to its long lost glory.

Before we move onto talk about Azir's game mechanics and abilities, let's discuss how, as part of the Azir's release event, we also get visual upgrades to several Shurima champs, like Cassiopeia and Renekton, and a new featured game mode Ascension.

In Ascension, two teams of five players must attempt to capture relics, defeat enemy champs, and fight the Ascended (Xerath). If you defeat the Ascended, one of the champions on your team ascends, growing large and gaining a lot of buffs temporarily. This game is pretty simple and borrows a lot of elements from Dominion, but I'm glad to see it thinking outside of the box with elements like an extended cloud of war (a sandstorm) and a variant of the base map (meaning all sorts of special teleporting).

Now, back to Azir:

Azir is a hybrid (more "hy-bird") mage that focuses on building cooldown, auto attack speed, and AP to tear down towers with an army of his own sand minions. His kit provides him with a ton of lane-pushing potential and harass, allowing him to be a potential bully in any lane, and he has just enough escape, disengage, and zoning abilities to help escape ganks from all but the most relentless of foes.
His passive, Will of the Emperor, has two functions: it grants him a flat bonus to attack speed for building cooldown. This is essential to his kit as Azir relies on auto attacking to control his minions and take down objectives. The other part of his Passive, an activated ability, allows him to temporarily raise turrets on destroyed buildings. This unique ability allows him to farm when even out of lane, though it is debuffed if he is too far away, and also allows him to zone his opponents in lane to prevent ganks and help position in team fights. A unique and potent ability that is extremely satisfying, unique, and useful.

Speaking of utility, let's skip his other abilities to talk about Arise, Azir has to pick it at Level 1: Arise raises a temporary melee minion from the sands that has a long range on its attacks and interacts with Azir's other abilities. The minions stay tethered to Azir and require his autoattacks to attack anything, making them far less independent than something like Malzahar's voidlings, but compensate through their crazy utility with his other abilities. They can be cast over walls, there is no limit on the number of units that can be produced (though they only last about nine seconds), and they do grant vision. Lastly, they cannot attack turrets or buildings. Instead, you can expend a cast to deal direct damage to a turret (which really lends itself to Azir's push potential). I'd recommend leveling this first.

Azir's primary aggressive ability is Conquering Sands an ability that sends all of Azir's minions to a target location, striking all enemies in their path, and slowing all targets hit. This gives you the ability to reposition your minions, poke and chase enemies, and last hit minions at a distance. I'd recommend leveling this second.

Azir's E, Shifting Sands, has him dash to a target sand minion, hitting all enemy creatures in his path, until he reaches the sand minion or strikes an enemy champion. If Azir hits an enemy champion with Shifting Sands, he stops at their location, knocks them them, and gains a shield. This ability is great for escapes, chases, and engages. I can see a lot of combo potential but the real utility comes in mobility/escapes since it allows Azir to hop over walls with ease.

Azir's disengaging R, Emperor's Divide, knocks back enemies in its path and creates a wall that prevents their movement and dashes. Allies can move through the wall to gain a speed boost but otherwise the wall is just a temporary barrier. This ability is vital for escapes and team fight disengage but has some aggressive potential since it can be used to block the path of enemies.

All in all, his kit is fairly interesting and I can't wait to see team comps that are built around this unique champion.
Oh and Azir's alternate skin let's you construct additional pylons and you all know...

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/13/14!

bulwark [bool-werk]
noun
1. A wall of earth or other material built for defense; rampart.
2. Any protection against external danger, injury, or annoyance: The new dam was a bulwark against future floods.
3. Any person or thing giving strong support or encouragement in time of need, danger, or doubt.

verb
4. To fortify or protect with a bulwark; secure by or as if by a fortification.

EX. The bulwark of botlane and defender of the innocent has arrived on Summoner's Rift with the Braum, the Heart of the Freljord, being released to the public servers!

Braum hails from the frosty Freljord, where he is truly a Legend worth of the League, and is known by the smallest poro to the biggest yeti for his heroic deeds. Braum was raised on a small farm by his mother, where he learned to care for all living things and built his body to be more powerful than an avalanche, and, rather than using his power for selfish pursuits, the brawny man completely dedicated his life to helping others. He went from local hero to local legend when he found his legendary "shield". A troll boy had become trapped behind a massive door, seeking treasure within, and no one could get him out. Then, Braum appeared. He struck his fists upon the door, but it did not bend or break. So, in typical Braum fashion, he punched through the other side of the mountain to save the troll boy, just in the nick of time, and take the door as his "shield". Since then, Braum has realized his heroism is needed beyond his homeland and seeks to test his mettle in the League of Legends.

What tools does he used to protect his comrades?

Braum's Passive is Concussive Blows. Upon hitting an enemy champion with an auto attack or his Q, every autoattack against that champion applies an additional stack of Concussive Blows, including autoattacks from ally champions. After three more stacks, the enemy champion is stunned. This gives Braum a great incentive to lay autoattacks on as many enemy champions as possible to set up some fight turning crowd control. His Q, Winter's Bite, is a ranged skillshot that slows the first enemy hit and adds a stack of Concussive Blows. This is a great ability for chasing down or fleeing from a foe in lane or abroad. His W, Stand Behind Me, allows Braum to leap between his nearest ally and opponent, and grants a small defensive buff. His W is a great ability for setting up his E or getting around the map as it even allows him to leap small barriers. His E, Unbreakable, his signature defensive move, allowing him to create a temporary shield in one direction that, much like Yasuo's windwall, blocks certain sorts of ranged attacks, immediately negating the first hit and reducing each subsequent hit, and ultimately allows Braum to become a walking wall against projectiles to protect his allied champions. Lastly, his ult is a ranged skillshot that knocks up all enemies directly around him and in front of him in a straight line and applies an area slow effect. This is a great ability for disengaging your enemies.

All in all, it is clear that Braum's move set is made for protecting carries and that's an idea we should all get behind. See you in bot lane!

WORD OF THE DAY! 4/18/14! (LoL Update!)

brawny [braw-nee]
adjective
1. Strong, muscular.

EX. Who is the brawny man with the mustache and a soft spot for Poros? Well, all evidence seems to point toward him being the newest champion coming to the League of Legends, presumed to be named "Braum". Most speculation points the muscular mustachioed macho man being the much-needed support addition that we've been waiting for this year.

He isn't Poro-Poro the Wonder Poro, but I think any champion that puts his life on the line for poros and comes to the League with two big beefy arms to give bear hugs to his ADC is a welcome addition to the ever-growing cast of characters in the game.

Perhaps the concept was inspired, or just a happy coincidence, by this hilarious comic and concept for a champ named "Angus".

MUSIC MON! CHRISTMAS LEFTOVERS: NINTENDO 64s, POROS, & "YULETIDE LOGS"!

N64 is/was probably the definite Christmas gift for many kids in the 90's and, honestly, it was a special time in gaming history. The N64 set the bar for 3D platforming with Super Mario 64, the FPS genre with Rare's 007: Golden Eye, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely considered one of the best game, if not the best, games of all time. The console also firmly set Nintendo's position going forward; while Sony's Playstation consoles were focused on cutting edge technology and attracted a lot of third party support, Nintendo would hang around thanks to their uniquely Nintendo experience that, while being played on hardware a step behind, included games that couldn't be found on any other console thanks to being a step out of line with the rest of the game industry, often for the better, with offbeat, funny, and experimental titles.

Personally, if not for the janky controller, I think it would be as fondly coveted as it's predecessors the NES & SNES.

I don't have much to say with this one, but I will say I'm kind of said that Snowdown Showdown had to come to a close so early. Much like One for All, Riot has left fans wanting more. It really is a shame that the mode was only available for a limited time. It would be nice if we could at least keep them for Customs but, alas, I understand their desire to not add too many game modes to the game:

Adding more game mods ultimately can ultimately divide a community by replacing a few large well-populated and popular game types with a lot of under-populated and often mediocre game types can lead to the mass extinction of a game community.

Hell, this also illuminated the big problem with the MMO genre, as well as any multiplayer genre, when it comes to over-saturation: big multiplayer games require a large base of subscribers/people buying content to stay afloat because of the costs to first make the game and to continue updating a game designed to keep players interests indefinitely rather than having them stray away. World of Warcraft is the only very successful MMO because, whenever a competing title hits the scene, some players leave WoW but will always ultimately return to the experience populated by their friends and to keep from abandoning all of the work and time they invested into their characters. Until the WoW experience becomes stale to these players or an experience with enough widespread appeal and holding power can hit the market, making any new MMO is inadvisable. Many good game studios have crashed and burned trying to chase that dragon and many more will meet that fate.

Just some thoughts and observations for your perusal. Moving on...

Getting older means appreciating a good poop.

WORD OF THE DAY! 12/22/13! SNOWDOWN SHOWDOWN PT.3! (LoL Update)

poro [por-oh]
noun
1. League of Legends. A native beast to the Freljord, these fluff balls are seemingly harmless and useless. If the creatures found on the Howling Abyss are fed Poro-Snax Biscuits, they will grow larger until, after eating ten biscuits, will pop into 7 or 8 poro-lings.

(SOURCE)
And, if I still have your attention (after Part 1 and Part 2), I want to talk about the strongest League champ concept I've thought of so far; Poroporo the Wonder Poro.

Poroporo was a small Poro. But not just the smallest Poro in the adorable explosion that spawned his siblings. Poroporo was the smallest Poro in all of the Freljord. All of the other Poros used to laugh and call Poroporo names. After all, a tiny Poro like Poroporo would never be given any Poro Snax by the terrifying tourists of the Howling Abyss. Then, Nunu tried to eat all of the Poros in Howling Abyss! But Poroporo didn't run around in circles. Poroporo bit Nunu's butt! Nunu ran away from the Abyss on a rampage and neither he nor his little buddy could remove the pest. Poroporo was small but tough! Eventually, they got an Ice Witch to remove the pest but, so inspired by its courage, she took him as a pet and began fattening the little munchkin up. She also enchanted it so that Poroporo would always come back together after popping and eventually Poroporo became the biggest Poroporo in the land... but he still hungered for Yeti and somehow managed to find his way into the Summoner's Rift as the seemingly dopiest champion of all time!

I'm aware the story could be better, but this was improved in about ten minutes...

Poroporo is a melee support champ with a secondary role as a fighter. PP is a tank with the ability to protect lane partners as a living shield.

Poroporo's Passive, Nomnom, which would allow PP to grow and gain a stack of Nomnom every time that it uses a consumable (PP has to finish using a healing potion, mana potion, or biscuit to gain a stack). Every time it grows/gains a stack, PP gains defensive stats like health, armor, and magic resistance. Poroporo can have a max of eight stacks. When PP dies, PP loses half of PP's stacks.

Nomnom is a flavorful passive that can be worked into almost all of PP's abilities.

Poroporo's Q is Nog Launch, allowing PP to dash forward and knock up and away all champs in a target area.

Nog Launch is PP's bread and butter ability that gives him a ton of disruption.

Poroporo's W is Chomp Chomp. It is a targeted melee attack where Poroporo bites an enemy minion or champ and roots them for a very short period. If not reactivated, PP will become attached to an enemy champ and gain a stack of Nomnom until the ability is reactivated or PP is disrupted/killed. While attached, the champ is slowed.

This ability allows PP to seek out a single target and stay on target.

Poropro's E is Love Puddles and has two uses: a Passive that allows him to also grow every time that he gains a level.

Love Puddles is an activated aura that heals all nearby champions and PP. It drains PP's mana over time. It also gives a small boost to nearby champion MR and Armor based on the number of Nomnom stacks that PP has.

A good support ability that give Poroporo's allies sustain.

Poroporo's R is Poro-Splosion! PP's Ult has PP explode in AoE knocks back allies, enemies, minions, and monsters. PP becomes a swarm of little targetable Poros with increased move speed and attack speed that all act as one unit. The number of Poros is equal to Poroporo's stack of Nomnom. If PP had no stacks, activating R gives PP four stacks of Nomnom. Each of the little Poros has decreased Armor and MR and, if they die, PP loses a stack of Nomnom. By reactivating Poro-Splosion or dying, Poroporo becomes a single target again and returns to normal.

This ability is a great initiate and opens up all sorts of position possibilities. Combined with PP's Q and W, PP can work as a great Jungle.

And, for the first skin, I think it would be fun to have a two-pack! A Mr. and Ms. Poro pack with skins based on Mr. and Ms. Pacman! This not only plays off of the cute glutton theme of Poroporo, it also plays off of the gender neutral theme and the general body shape. It's pretty clever, in my humble opinion.

What do you think of this champ concept? I think it would be a good addition for three reasons:

1. Poros are a creature unique to League of Legends and everyone loves them/

2. Poroporo would be the least humanoid champion ever. This sort of creative addition would add some diversity to the roster.

3. His ability suite is familiar but uniquely PP's own. A disruptive melee tank that focuses on zoning and chasing would be fun.

I'd love to get some feedback on this rather light concept.

I've been playing a lot of LoL and I'm really loving the poro-filled map, The Howling Abyss they added for ARAM. Anybody else play LoL? Which champions are your faves? I play a lot of Alistar, Malzahar, Kog'Maw, Chogath, and Wukong!
