MUSIC MON! SCOTT PILGRIM VS. POPPY IS A SIMPLE PLOT?

Scott Pilgrim VS. The World is a film that came out at the wrong time with little fanfare or advertising. I remember being hyped about the film based on the trailers and just the premise presented in the comic. The trailer promised a stylized attempt to bring the comic and the pop culture it evolved from onto the big screen...

...and the film actually delivers on the promise. Scott Pilgrim remains a fairly unique film, although some films and television shows have used editing and graphic additions similar in their own ways, and the style delivers the most comic book comic book movie that I can think of. The pacing, framing, humor, etc. all create a unique world. A unique universe.

It's a shame the film remains such a flop (even in dvd/bluray sales) but it has a cult following for a reason.

In my long hiatus, I didn't really get a chance to talk about League of Legends many updates and, my favorite update, the Poppy update is one of my favorites. They took a champion that didn't really fit into the way the game functions, didn't really telegraph well, and generally stuck out as a rather ugly eyesore in the roster. Not only did they visually enhance the champion into being one of the cutest champions and help cement what defines "yordles" (the cute little critter species from League of Legends lore) but also created a viable and fun champ.

Good job, Rito.

I still need to play Metal Gear Solid 5...

TUNE TUES! HERE'S TO YOU KOJIMA-SAN!

Hideo Kojima, creator and creative mind behind the Metal Gear Solid franchise, might be the best or closest example of an auteur in the medium called "video games".

What is an "auteur"?

An auteur, literally French for "author", is the term traditionally applied to a filmmaker whose creative vision, personal ideals, and artistic control over a film are so great that they are regarded as the author of the work. This term is taken further in discussions of the medium so that, while often there are many hands and minds behind any given film project or projects, this auteur is credited as the true author of the works.

For example, Alfred Hitchcock's style permeates his films to the point where his creative vision is at the forefront and the films he worked on are regarded as "Hitchcock films".

In discussion of film, the term auteur is usually not awarded by critics to just any prolific director; they are afforded to directors with a catalog of film's sharing distinctive traits, from the dreamscapes of Akira Kurosawa to quirky storybook worlds of Wes Anderson, the works of an auteur make up their own world or idealogy. In short, they are a reflection of their creator's vision.

While some independent games are the sole work of a single creative, or a few, AAA titles like Bungie's Destiny or whatever Assassin's Creed game just came out, are the works of dozens of artists, writers, animators, programmers, testers, etc. to the point where Credit sequences in these games take on the lengths of short films. And yet, while the Metal Gear Solid series is the work of so many individuals, no one, besides perhaps Konami, would try to argue that the series wasn't Hideo Kojima's.

The series builds a dramatic world constructed from James Bond action fodder, giant robot anime, Italian spaghetti westerns, military vehicle model construction, geopolitical history, conspiracy theories, etc. that are all reflections of the things Kojima finds cool and come together into some simultaneously beautiful, gruesome, overwrought, genuine, fashionable and dorky creation that is uniquely "metal gear".

The conceits of the series can be rather striking in their contradiction, such as the inclusion of Metal Gear Solid: Rising Revengeance, a game that stands out from the other series by following a protagonist who seems to revel in dicing his enemies into tiny bits with a giant samurai sword, while also having a disturbing subplot about saving child soldiers from being coopted into cyborg killing machines. In a game where a ridiculously hard to miss cyborg samurai wears a sombrero and a poncho as a disguise, we're shortly thereafter greeted with a horrific collection of floating orphan brains in jars, still conscious as their eyes follow you across the room, and meant to illicit legitimate feelings of horror. I realize some might complain about the inclusion of Rising Revengeance in my little rant here but it illustrates, perhaps better than anything, what is "metal gear" and what is "Kojima-esque".

It revels in the ridiculous and yet, somehow, comes out the other side as something that is genuinely thought provoking and cool. Metal Gear is unique and it is depressing to think MGSV may be the last chapter.

Uh, well, I just gave you guys like a quick sloppy essay to try and explain my feelings about Metal Gear. So um, here is this and:

Go watch Rick and Morty.

That is all.

MIXED BAG. UNBOX-KING #29 HALO GUARDIANS LMTD. EDITION XBOX ONE CONSOLE!

It took some doing but I am finally back in the mud with the console peasants (and yes I have a Wii-U but we both know Nintendo isn't trying to compete with the other two big consoles and they haven't found it to be a threat either...until NDX rears its head next year). And, I gotta say, while the console is gorgeous, it is exactly what I expected:

A more powerful 360. I'll admit that part of my hesitation, to buy either the ONE or the PS4, has been that this generation feels like such a small step forward that I wasn't dazzled by any of the new social features or gizmos. More so than ever, this generation feels like it is holding back technology and falling way behind the PC curve set into motion by services like Steam that give PC gaming a lot of affordable custom options. In fact, the first game I booted up, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, was notably less impressive on my new console as my three year old Dell. This generation of games has been scaled back, again, from maintaining a standard of 60 fps and it shows. And I'm not even the sort of guy to pick apart the graphical nitpicks. It was noticeable different when I booted up the Menu Screen.

BUT, and this is a big but, I didn't buy an Xbone to replace my PC. I bought a Xbone to share multiplayer experiences with my friends who have an Xbone but lack a dedicated gaming PC. And I am still excited to be able to play Halo 5, Battlefront, and Black Ops 3 this Holiday season. Even if it cost me an arm and a leg, friendship is worth it.

P.S. It really is a pretty console.

WTF WED! A WEAPON TO SURPASS METAL GRUMP!

I really like ProJared:

PROJARED: SUPER BONK!

So, seeing him as the first guest on Game Grumps, since Rareware's Greg Kirkhope on the first (and only) Guest Grumps, was pretty cool. I didn't expect to have live-action shenanigans like seeing behind-the-scenes of the boys trying to film at night or ignoring security or being bothered by fans to an almost threatening to degree.

And this... um, just, don't watch it at work. It is funny though.

METAL GEAR SOLID 5: GROUND ZEROES REVIEW OR EGORAPTOR VS. GHOST PEPPER!

Scoville scale [scoh-vil-yoo-nits]
noun
1. The measurement of the pungency (spicy heat) of spicy foods, especially peppers, measured by capsaicin concentration. Regardless of the fact that this is an empirical method dependent on the sensitivity of testers, it is the most prominent method of measuring capsaicin concentration.

EX. You should subscribe to Hot Pepper Gaming. The channel's premise is to get a youtuber, have them eat an especially hot pepper, and then try to review the game despite their mouth, throat, stomachs and bodies being racked with pain, heat, and revulsion in reaction to the peppers. A little over half a year ago, Egoraptor made his first appearance on the channel with his review, and it was hilarious. The pepper he ate before reviewing Monster Hunter 3 was a Habanero pepper with a Scoville Scale rating of 100,000 to 300,000 units. With Tabasco sitting at about 30,000 to 50,000 units, that means that a Habanero is about ten times as powerful.

In the two pictures at the header of the article, Arin Hanson AKA Egoraptor, is seen before and after eating a Ghost Pepper or Bhut Jolokia, a pepper grown and cultivated in India, for his review of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. Its Scoville rating is much more varied but lands it closer to 1,000,000 units. That means it is often ranked about 10 times more powerful than a Habanero or 100 times the power of Tabasco. Some police forces in India use the Ghost Pepper as an ingredient in weapon's grade pepper spray. This means Egoraptor is in a hilarious amount of pain for our amusement. To schaudenfreude!

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/24/13!

commando [kuh-man-doh]
noun
1.a. Any of the specially trained Allied military units used for surprise, hit-and-run raids against Axis forces.
b. A member of any of these units.
2. Any military unit organized for operations similar to those of the commandos of World War II.
3. A member of a military assault unit or team trained to operate quickly and aggressively in especially urgent, threatening situations, as against terrorists holding hostages.
adverb
4. To wear no underpants.

EX. Captain America teamed up with the Howling Commandos in WW2, Solid Snake is the most infamous commando in video games, and 1/4 members of Ron Burgundy's news team is probably going commando.

WTF WED! CRAZY AMY, KRAZY KOJIMA, AND KRAZIER KIM JONG-UN PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS!

First up, we've got a fantastic animation from Jaxamoto that perfectly captures reality TV and the internet's flavor of the week meme, Crazy Amy's Baking Company from Kitchen Nightmares. The episode goes down as the first time that the show's host, Gordon Ramsay (a popular meme mainstay for years), has actually given up on saving a restaurant.

Something I found particularly amusing about the animation in this video is how it reminded me of Adult Swim classic Home Movies. I think it was a fun little nod to the episode where Brendan is looking after a crazy cat couple's pet feline and it escapes, catches rabies, and is put down. The funny thing about that episode is that, much like the tragedy befalling Crazy Amy's restuarant and her partner (who might get deported), by the end you really don't feel sorry for these nutjobs. And this is coming from a really nice guy. Anywho...

Okay. So we're all pretty hyped for Metal Gear Solid 5. Hideo Kojima is a mad genius and MGS4 was one of the best games that I played in the last generation. But, despite how much we love the franchise, Kojima, being a mad genius, has made some strange moves before. This time around...it seems that David Hayter (voice actor and screenwriter extraordinaire) will NOT be reprising his role as Snake in the next game.

This is pretty disappointing situation for most MGS fans. In this week's video from Zan, we'll have to see if he can save Snake's voice with a little help from a couple of Grumps.

And lastly, and probably leastly, is the tiny tyrant Kim Jong-Un's pro-player pick for League of Legends that is an amusing satire of the Pro Player Pick videos that Riot Games has become quite fond of posting.

And really, that's it. Goodbye.

I need a new hat.

MUSICAL MON! LEAGUE OF LEGENDARY METAL GEAR SOLID PLASTIC ROCK BANDS!

This week our Musical Monday is all about video games and first up I've gotta confess my newest gaming obsession, League of Legends. I started playing about three weeks ago after seeing some friends were playing it. I love playing multiplayer games and teamwork, especially with friends, so I hopped on the bandwagon. So far, my favorite champions to play are Support Alistar, Hybrid Carry-Mage Kog'Maw, and Tanky Garen. I hope that I can live up to my friend's expectations on the Fields of Justice.

"V is awake." Hideo "Frickin'" Kojima is a master game maker and loves to play with his audience's expectations. This is the first time that I can truly appreciate his mind games, because this is the first time I can really, really call myself a Metal Gear Solid fan awaiting the announcement of a new Metal Gear Solid. Phantom Pain has been teased for a while, but it wasn't revealed until recently that it is, in fact, Metal Gear Solid 5.

The mystery surrounding the game is palpable, the new game engine is pretty impressive, but the first question I want answered is..."if not David Hayter, than who?"

This would be time to get a little nostalgic and teary-eyed if I hadn't already accepted the downfall of music gaming with plastic instruments a couple of years ago. I suppose I need to explain my relationship with the biggest rise and fall of a subgenre in the last generation.

It started with getting my sister Guitar Hero 2 for her birthday. It didn't take long for us to bond over the game. The game that cinched our relationship with the subgenre was Rock Band. The guys who made Guitar Hero 1 and 2 possible, Harmonix, split off and began making their own games-- and not only were they awesome, they created a party game experience that couldn't be topped. With a singer, two guitars (one for guitar/one for base) and a drumset allowed you to simulate the band experience. Anybody could try Rock Band and everyone I could get to try it...did. Even my Grandpa.

Rock Band became an innovative series, adding instruments, adding more and more downloadable tracks, and finally allowing users to upload their own songs. Guitar Hero was still around and the genre became crowded by copycats that, blatantly, sucked. It was only a matter of time before people grew tired and moved onto the next thing. Rock Band hung around, releasing content, despite their last big release being way back in 2010.

But after a few years, Rock Band saw less and less attention as my sister seemed more and more busy. The plastic instruments lie in a corner of our entertainment room and, occasionally, I glance at them with nostalgic desire to return to a time when I could belt out hits (yes, I was the guy who sang), with my sister on bass/guitar, and two other friends picking up the pieces as we rocked for hours and hours.

It's been over 5 years since Rock Band 1 hit the shelves and, as of March 31, they released their last song to the Rock Band network, "American Pie". Time will tell the future of this subgenre and the giant that really made up the backbone of this party ain't going now where. Now, enjoy a picture of my dog sitting in front of my rockband stuff from a few Christmases ago...

WORD OF THE DAY! 1/1/12

raiden / raijin [rahy-dehn / rahy-jeen]
noun
1. a god of lightning, thunder, and storms in the Shinto religion and Japanese mythology.
2. Video game. A character from Mortal Kombat series, he is the god of thunder and protector of the Earth realm.
3. Video game. A character from the Metal Gear series, a cyborg ally of Solid Snake.

EX. Why is there a new evolution of Pikachu that transform the Electric Mouse into the Thunder Mouse? I know there is Raichu, but how about you make Raiden or Raijin into Raidu or Raiju.
