PHELOUS: DEADLY FRIEND

I dunno why-- maybe I'm just desensitized to violence after two decades of video games and anime or, probably more likely, the over-the-top violence hits the sweet spot of comedy in defying your expectations by surprising me and/or going past the graphic and into the cartoonishly over-the-top-- but I love a good bit of violence in my entertainment from time to time. Sure, I'll watch all the Disney musicals and yeah I deplore violence as a way to resolve conflicts in all but the most extreme circumstances where it is the only option or the only option left, but in fiction I can enjoy the fantasy or spectacle that is over-the-top violence. Some people may find such violence to be offensive or even a bad influence. I find it to be a harmless outlet for the pent up rage fantasies that we, as a very violent species, tend to have at least every now and then.

It's the reason why I love movies like Super; watching fantasy violence that is intentionally or unintentionally ridiculous is cathartic, funny, and harmless. The obscene and graphic, when absurd, is gratifying. It's the reason I've wanted to create an anime with a guy with a giant fist who fights super powered villains just so he could just punch the crap out of them. It's the reason I've wanted to write a comic book about a guy who comes back from each grisly death with a temporary new super power every time he is killed. It's the reason that I let my Dungeons and Dragons adventures include moments like a wizard literally blowing an Ettin's mind until his heads are a couple of blood fountains like shook up blood cola spurting a few feet into the air.

Hell, it's the reason I'm giving Dead Snow 2 any attention. They had me at death punch.

7. WORD OF THE DAY! 6/8/12. Hassle.

"Don't hassle the Hoff" are simple words that we could all learn to live by. After all, in our daily lives, how often do we dream of motoring across the sea on our well-tanned washboard abs to save a talking sponge and his starfish life partner from the beach. Worst case scenario? When you launch them to the bottom of the sea, using your mechanical pecs, you might pull a muscle; but that is a small price to pay to stop Plankton and save King Neptune.

6. WORD OF THE DAY! 6/6/12. Monochromatic Eyes.

Just in case you ever wondered why, in cartoons and comics, heroes always have white spaces in their mask's eyeholes. I give you exhibit A.

5. WTF WEDNESDAY: EAGLEHEART "SKY CRIME!"

In the sky, there are no laws and "The Baron" rules this criminal overworld from his flying zeppelin "Cloudtopia." The response of Chris? Extremely violent vigilante warfare on the criminals who think they can escape the long hairy arm of the law."

1. WORD OF THE DAY! 6/7/12. Darth, Time Lord

First of all, I want to hear what you guys thought of this little bit of fan fiction I came up with and I want to know who you think would win, assuming the Doctor has some force sensitivity.

The other thing I want to talk about is Matt Smith. Having watched him for two seasons and two Christmas specials, I have grown attached to the Eleventh Doctor and his companions. I think, at time, Smith can be a little too goofy and he doesn't have the intensity of Eccleston or Tennant, but the performance he brings has a lot of interesting angles and I find his shifts between silly man and time-traveling ancient badass to be quite natural and a little bit more seamless than those of his predecessors. I think Tennant is still my favorite, but another good season with Smith might change my mind.

WTF WEDNESDAY PRESENTS

EAGLEHEART: "MASTER OF DA' SKIES!"

 Eagleheart was a must-see from the first trailer I watched and it really came down to two huge factors; the show is a satire of 90's over the top super cop shows, specifically, Walker: Texas Ranger (starring Chuck Norris) and it starred an actor I've seen pull off funny performances in so many weird places, Chris Elliot. 

The show is about Chris Monsanto, a US Marshal that fights crime alongside dim-witted Brett (Brett Gelmen) and by-the-book Susie (Maria Thayer). In  a constant war against criminals, from art smugglers to evil-twin con artists, Chris will use ultra-violence at the levels that would make just about anyone cringe to kill anyone in his way.

The episode that really captured my attention and screams out as a perfect example of a good episode, is Episode 3 of the 1st Season, "Master of Da' Skies", where Chris discovers a shocking loophole in local law. In the sky, there are no laws and "The Baron" rules this criminal overworld from his flying zeppelin "Cloudtopia." The response of Chris? Extremely violent vigilante warfare on the criminals who think they can escape the long hairy arm of the law.

Eagleheart is probably the most promising live-action show to come to Adult Swim that I've ever seen. It is currently rocking out its second season and I have high hopes that it'll hit its third.
