MUSIC MON! STARKI'S THE TRAIL TO OREGON: THE MUSICAL!

Just like getting a musical on last Halloween weekend, getting another Star Kid musical on Valentine's Day weekend is certainly a pleasant surprise.

The Trail to Oregon is an uproarious parody of the classic PC game, The Oregon Trail, complete with a farm family with names like "Crab Hole" and "Mouthface", a crappy wagon pulled by a deformed oxen, and all of the hilariously messed up things that happen along the trail. Check it out if you love musicals, simulation and/or Manifest Destiny. Wait what?

Also check out their last musical which had the thesis: Podracing is the only thing Anakin Skywalker was ever good at.

And remember to check out the incredible Sci-Fi film parody, filled with bits from Starship Troopers to Bug's Life, from Starkid:

Also, make sure to check out the definite must-see for fans of Batman, fans of Starkid, or fans of musicals is "Holy Musical B@man!" their latest and most awesome show. You can watch the whole thing by clicking the link below.

But my favorite is probably the amazing Disney parody, with a focus on Aladdin, that they wowed their fans with last year:

Or if you want to go back to the original hits and some Harry Potter, check out A Very Potter Musical and/or its Sequel. They have a number of other productions that are definitely worth seeking out, as well.

MUSIC MON! TEAM STARKID'S TWISTED: THE UNTOLD STORY OF A ROYAL VIZIER! + WORD OF THE DAY!

twist [twist-id]
verb
1. To form by winding pieces of material together.
2. To pull apart in different directions.
3. To distort, such as an object, meaning, or person.
noun
4. A deviation or turn.
5. An object formed by twisting.

Holy smokes! I was sort of feeling tuckered out when I came back from work on Thanksgiving's Day morning, but then I saw the newest Team Starkid musical sitting in my youtube queue!

This time they're taking a swing at satirizing one of my favorite subjects, the animated Disney musical. But it's more than that. Twisted, clearly, began as their take on the Wicked format of taking a story's villain and retelling the story in a more sympathetic light in their favor. This results in a effortlessly enjoyable and ineffably funny bit of Aladdin satire that makes Jafar a hard-working, humble, and oft-hated anti-hero in a kingdom of, at best, witless and thankless crumbums!

And it's pretty much perfect. The stand-out is Dylan Saunders as Jafar who finally gets his chance to belt it out and gives a stirring & compelling performance in the middle of a very silly comedy. We've seen him ham it up as the flamboyant Dumbledore with an obsession with Zephron, a giant scorpion named Pincer, & the drunken Green Lantern, but his turn as the miserable, but well-meaning civil servant, Jafar.

You can check out the whole show at the link at the top of the page or check out the first part HERE.

MUSICAL MONDAY! STARSHIP: THE MUSICAL!

STARKID's STARSHIP!

Time to talk about a very special production from my favorite musical production team, Starkid's "Starship." I don't think its a coincidence that the name of the show shares similarities to the name of the team; after all, this production, though silly, has earned its place in my heart for a number of reasons while playing homage to the tropes and strengths the team built over the other projects.

This musical takes place on a bug-infested planet that is a twisted and delightful amalgam of Pixar's Bug's Life and the cult classic Starship Troopers. The insectoid aliens are a mix of puppets and cut-outs that form a slightly disgusting, but mostly endearing hive of creatures. Among them is one bug named, well, Bug. And he too lives up to the Disney parody that is a light frosting in this sci-fi horror satire cake, as he wants that classic "something more". Specifically, after viewing some videos from a wrecked human ship, he wants to be a "Starship Ranger".

Speaking of Starship Ranges, the other half of the cast is made up of carefully stitched together caricatures of all our favorite cliche characters; from the Latina badass to the "rough" Commander to the country bumpkin to the nerd to the whiny red shirt to the killer robot and of course the evil company guy.

And as these two groups clash, the only thing standing between peace and war is our loveable hero, Bug.

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/24/12.

agalmatophilia [a-gal-mah-toh-fee-lee-a]
noun
1. Sexual attraction or romantic affection toward a statue, doll, mannequin, robot, or other similar figurative object. The attraction may include a dsire to have an encounter with one of these objects/subjects, animate or inanimate, or watching encounters between such objects, or the thought of transformations involving such objects.

EX. At first, agalmataophilia probably seems pretty crazy but it is, actually,  quite common in science fiction. Some popular examples of robo-sexual (reference: Futurama) relationships between automatons and "hyoomahns". There is of course a plethora of manga/anime with such a premise, such as Chobits.

More example robot-human relations would be would be Marvel Comic's kinky marriage of Scarlet Witch and Vision, Ishinomori's depressing Pinocchio robot Kikaider and Mitsuko, and the super creepy Johnny-5's relationship with Stephenie in Short Circuit. It goes all the way back to Fritz Lang's Metropolis's robotic seductress.

My favorite? Tootsie Noodles + Megagirl 4 Ever!

(Expect more about this on Monday. *wink wink*)

MUSICAL MONDAY! HOLY MUSICAL B@MAN!

STARKID's HOLY MUSICAL B@MAN!

So, Starkid, the production team behind the internet musical, A Very Potter Musical, put out a new musical last Friday dedicated to everyone's favorite Caped-Crusader, Batman. This hilarious musical is a fantastic satire of all things related to the cheesier side of the Dark Knight from satire of Superman's rivalry and Robin's "suckyness".

If you remember A Very Potter Musical, and/or its sequel, than you probably remember how the quality was mixed in those productions. This production is the most technically sound, with top notch sound quality, great numbers, and plenty of tongue-in-cheek spectacle.

A definite must-see for fans of Batman, fans of Starkid, or fans of musicals. You can watch the whole thing by clicking the link below.

MUSICAL MONDAY! A VERY POTTER MUSICAL!

A lot of musical fans know Darren Criss as one of the ensemble characters from Fox's Glee. Heck, he's been Blaine for a couple of seasons, an openly gay and confident student who scored the first Billboard #1 Hit for the show with his cover of Katy Perry's Teenage Dreams. I know him as Harry F-ing Potter.

I first saw Darren Criss way back in 2009, or so, starring in A Very Potter Musical on Youtube. The musical is a Starkid fan production with music and lyrics written by Darren Criss and A.J. Holmes and a book written by by Matt Lang, Nick Lang, and Brian Holden. The musical is a full production piece that stretches out to three acts and is one of the most enjoyable finds I have ever watched on youtube. It lovingly satires J. K. Rowling's creations and tropes- from bumbling gay Dumbledore to blond haired bully Malfoy, and creates an amusing spectacle that no true Harry Potter or Darren Criss fan should miss out on.

If you haven't already checked it out, make sure to watch it at the link below. Or if you want more Potter, check out A Very Potter Sequel.
