UNBOX-KING #11 KING DEDEDE AMIIBO!

This week, against all odds, I broke down and paid about as much as I would ever want to pay for an Amiibo ($25 with free shipping) so that I could get an NFC figure of my favorite and main Smash Bros. character, King Dedede.

A small note on collecting Amiibo's (a defense and a warning):

To those of you that might not get what all the hubbub is about around these pieces of Nintendo plastic, I would start by defending collecting figures and figurines, in general, by pointing out that, one way or another, a lot of us wind up spending money on small pieces of plastic.

Whether or not a piece of plastic has value is pretty much dependent on one's personal taste. It might be odd to clutter up my room with figures, to some, but value in an item can, to paraphrase "tidying consultant" Marie Kondo from her book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing", when de-cluttering one's house simply pick up an item and ask yourself, "Does this item spark joy?" If they do, keep it. If not, ditch it.

I'll be keeping this in mind if I ever need to tidy up my space but at the moment, I can assure you, that holding Dedede in my hand inspires joy. Why?

Ever since I saw the introductory cut scene of Super Smash Bros. Melee, in which a Mario figurine comes to life, and, enjoying the collection of figurine trophies in the game series, I have always wanted to own real Nintendo character figures. There have never been products of the quality widely advertised by Nintendo and, with the added benefit of being compatible with several games by unlocking DLC and other bonus features, these figures caught my interest. Ever since I saw that Skylanders and Disney Infinity were clearly a big success and here to stay, I knew Nintendo should take a risk and try it themselves. And, with the toys seeing such high demands from Nintendo fans, old and new, it is clear that the product was something many of us had been waiting to buy.

But, like anything with high demand and low numbers (the latter is something I blame Nintendo for not doing a better job at), scalpers have made collecting Amiibos a lot less fun. At first, it was just very difficult to acquire some of the early Amiibos but you could find them with some diligence. But, by the third wave of figures, the less common figures sold out within minutes online and store exclusives made it even harder to collect them all. Scalpers, by buying up large numbers of the figures to sell later for a profit (that I'll point out Nintendo is missing out on and that I know stores let them buy in bulk because they often have retail boxes in their ebay photos), are driving demand even higher but the number are still low. Some of the rarest figures sell for over $50 and so, if you wanna collect them all, it goes from a casual collector's hobby to something really only reserved for the hardcore and, while I would love to have all the Amiibos, I'm not paying $50 for a immobile figure when I could pay the same for a Nendoroid.

In conclusion (ooh, way to get high school essay on us), if you want to collect Amiibos, have at it, but I wouldn't recommend trying to collect them all until Nintendo does something about their low supply.

And that's all in this week's collector's rant.

WTF WED! 2014 = BEST YEAR IN GAMING (IF YOU'RE NINTENDO)!

The first WTF Wednesday of 2015 is gonna be used to celebrate the gaming company that, in many gamers opinions, dominated 2014 with a slew of fantastic releases, consumer-friendly practices, and delivering on just so much hype!

Meanwhile, from releasing unfinished and disappointing games to online networks being hacked to general big company dickery, other companies made this one of the most controversial years in the industry.

Let's start out this Nintendo tribute by looking at a controversial death battle between Dragon Ball Z's Majin Buu and Nintendo's pink bubblegum black hole of death, Kirby!

Fun fact! Kirby is one of my main three characters in Smash Bros 4!

I just got my copy of Omega Ruby and have been playing a Nuzlocke Challenge to make it more interesting. One of the big controversies with the games, made more relevant with the inclusion of the newer EXP share is that the games are too easy (even though you can turn the EXP share off).

Personally, I think they should include Nuzlocke options or harder difficulties for experienced players, but I dunno if that's feasible with their game's philosophy.

What do you think?

One of the funnest things to do in Smash Bros, if you haven't already done so, is to make custom Mii characters of famous people or your friends and duke it out for supremacy. I've always enjoyed making miis, especially of my friends, and we spent a whole afternoon fighting it out this past weekend.

If all else fails, you can petch. Always petch.

And Smash Bros was the best game of 2014. Deal with it!

But, for the first eleven months of the game, Mario Kart 8 was my go to game for partying with my friends! I know some people prefer Double Dash but, I gotta say, between the original tracks, characters, online mode, items, and the awesome DLC, this is my favorite Mario Kart. My favorite character is Ludwig.

MUSICAL MONDAY! END OF THE YEAR QUARTET!

MUSICAL MONDAY PRESENTS

Well, its my birthday so, rather than short you guys on Musical Monday, I've decided to give you a quadruple dose to send us into the next year. First up, I've put up another Game Grumps remix from xXJerryTerryXx. This is one of my favorite and it really puts a smile on my face.

As much as I hate to admit it.... I don't think that the Hobbit needed to be split into three films and filled to the brim with filler. On one hand, I love spending time in Middle Earth, but on the other hand, the films seem to suffer a little bit and the adaptations have gotten a little sloppier as Jackson takes a book shorter than any of the Lord of the Rings books and tries to stretch it beyond the limits of its rather scant travelogue. I suppose I can forgive him though because, while flawed, his talents allow it to escape the full taint of such a sell-out scenario and still make something enjoyable. End rant.

A little cheerier is a new twist on the Galaxy Song from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life performed by the ever energetic and enthused Eric Idle.

And finally, brentalfloss's newest and easily most cute video yet about the perilous relationship between a green dinosaur that eats everything and a lost baby.

MUSICAL MONDAYS! TOP 11 BRENTALFLOSS.

TOP 11 BRENTALFLOSS VIDEO

Welcome to my first Musical Monday blog. On Mondays I will be posting a cornucopia of blogs of different size and ambition. I might post a blog about the history of Wizard Rock or just a video with a break down of why I like it. Hell, some day I might do a sing along, who the fruit knows.

One type of blog I'll be doing is Top 6/Top 11 blogs. Today we focus on brentalfloss.

brentalfloss's (and yes, his name is supposed to be written in lowercase) videos focus on taking the soundtracks of classic video games and remixing them with his own lyrics, as part of the 'With Lyrics'. He is one of my favorite youtubers and his videos have been featured on Attack of the Show (G4 TV).

Real name Brent Black, brentalfloss has a youtube channel and also posts videos on screwattack.com. You can order CDs from his website's store, http://www.brentalfloss.com/store.cfm.cfm, or download them off of iTunes.

So here goes my Top 11 BRENTALFLOSS Videos.

11. Kirby W/ Lyrics

Who doesn't appreciate the little pink puffball getting a deserved kaiju treatment? Kirby is certainly more terrifying than the Cloverfield monster. He is basically a black hole with big cute googly eyes and runs around saying, "HIYYYYAAAEEE" before sucking you into his infinite vortex of gluttony!

10. Chrono Trigger: The Musical

I wish I could put this higher on the list because this is one of his least popular videos. As he states, he originally kept the first version of this video in his secret stash and even when animated it still has less views. Why? Chrono Trigger is pretty much a dead niche series (though an undeniable classic) and not everyone can appreciate what he is going for. This really is a sweet little song and a great parody of Colm Wilkinson's warbling (South Park also parodied him in a Thanksgivings Day special).

9. Castlevania II With Lyrics

I really hope companies like Konami appreciate fan stuff like this video. If it wasn't for people remixing the Castlevania soundtracks I would've written them off as another hack'n'slash without discovering the fun there is to be had.

8. Mega Man 3 "Game Over" With Lyrics

A sequel to the video that arguably rocketed him through the interwebs? brentalfloss completely captures the humiliation and the taunting of a game over song in a cheery, mean-spirited but playful fashion.
7. The Truth About Toad

brentalfloss really makes a great argument in the debate of "what the hell is Toad and is it gay?" The answer is a yes. Toad is Peach's gay butler who is useful for little but telling Mario that Peach is in another castle, being used as a human shield and throwing red turtle shells out of a go-kart. I wonder if we'll ever see an analysis of the enigma that is Lady Birdo.

6. Tetris With Lyrics

This is a wall in my room.
TETRIS WITH LYRICS! Click Here!

It has always been my opinion that Tetris's entire hook is the song. Don't get me wrong. I really enjoy playing Tetris. My room is painted up with tetriminos. I don't think Tetris a girl exclusive, though floss seems to think so, feel free to leave your opinions below.

5. Zelda II With Lyrics

Zelda II is a strange duck. Everyone remembers the original NES title and Link to the Past (to the Past is my favorite SNES game). Yet, everyone forgets this 2-D sidescroller with rp elements and a chick who wants to heal you with her....huh? Thanks to virtuaconsole and ROMs a lot of fans who missed this title are getting a second chance to enjoy it's weirdness.

4. Final Fantasy Victory Theme With Lyrics

Final Fantasy is a series with great music. The victory song is one of those that carries on game after game and sticks with you. Everyone has hummed or made up words to this song (kind of like the Mario Star Invincibility tune). brentalfloss really nails this short but sweet tune.

3. Dr. Mario With Lyrics

Much like Wario's case of Mushroom Rot, this video got around thanks to floss's awesome portrayal as Mario, the hilarious animation and the lyrics. Dr. Mario is a terrible physician. Every play Smash Bros? He uses pills as weapons!

2. Mega Man 3 With Lyrics EXTENDED RE-MIX

If Mega Man 3 With Lyrics turned us all onto to the awesome sauce that is brentalfloss, than the remix showed us that the only one who can improve his first big video is the man himself. I love this song's sing-along styled lyrics. It is bad ass in every way.

1. Zelda With Lyrics

This video introduced the awesome floss character that is "Old Man". Old Man is a oft-forgotten but oft-quoted hermit, "It's dangerous to go alone. Take This!" In the original Zelda, he gave Link a sword and sent him on his quest to save the princess. The effects, performance and lyrics of Zelda With Lyrics are perfect. It helps that this series arguably has the best music of any video game series (at least according to X-Play and myself) and brentalfloss's rock remix bring the awesome. The beard helps too.

And that's it for Musical Monday's Top 11 BRENTALFLOSS Videos.
