WORD OF THE DAY! 8/14/13!

self-preservation [self-prez-er-vehy-shun]
noun
1. Preservation of oneself from harm or destruction.

EX. Seriously, the animal/enemy AI has no sense of self-preservation in Skyrim. They see a dragon? They're gonna fight it. They see a dragonborn badass who just killed said dragon? They're gonna fight it. Just once I'd like to see somebody run after you display your badassery. If I beat a dragon to death with my fists, you should probably assume you don't want what I'm gonna dish out.

WORDS OF THE DAY! 8/13/13!

merchant [mur-chent]
noun
1. Elder Scrolls Series. While sometimes they are individuals you purchase commodities and crafting items, most of the time you use them as places to dump surplus loot in exchange for gold, despite the fact that it is inconceivable that they can manage to sell off their inventory.

EX. I think all good Skyrim players try to balance the following process: picking up loot from containers (including the dozens of corpses you encounter during your average adventure) so that you can get the most gold per pound of weight carried, even going so far to use magical items/perks to increase carrying weight, then taking that loot to several merchants in order to get them to buy as much of your useless gear as possible so you basically bankrupt them (I often buy crafting items from them so that I can sell them useless stuff), and then repeat the process ad nauseum.

Pro Tip #3,105: Make sure to pick up arrows that are worth any amount of gold. They have no weight, so you can carry a practically limitless amount, are always useful (archery has and will continue to be broken in the Elder Scrolls series), and are often worth a good chunk of change.

WORD OF THE DAY! 1/25/13.

rogue [rohg]
noun
1. A dishonest, knavish person; a scoundrel.
2. A tramp or vagabond.
3. A playful trickster or scamp; a mischief maker.
4. Dungeons & Dragons/Fantasy. A thief character capable of stealthy combat, versatile skills, such as sleight of hand and fast talk, and other tricks of sneaky and/or cunning variety.

EX. I tried to make a stealthier spellthief sorta rogue when I played Skyrim, but I always ended up getting distracted and just making my guy an uber monk who beats people to death with his bare hands and uses magic to stay alive longer than he should ever be able to manage.

detection [dih-tek-shuhn]

2. The fact of being detected.
3.  Discovery, as of error or crime.

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/31/12.

game boy [geym-bohy]
noun
1. Video Games. The first handheld electronic device for playing cartridge style games. It was the second handheld, after the Game & Watch series, combining features from the NES/Famicom and their previous handheld effort into a simple and successful device. It was followed by the pocket model, a smaller model, and then the Game Boy Color, with a broad color pallet and, eventually, the true successor the Game Boy Advance. The best selling titles in the console's history, which had a quite large catalogue, was Tetris (1989) and Pokemon Red & Blue (1996). It succeeded over its more technologically advanced competitors by being cheaper, more battery efficient, and having the Nintendo line of software title

EX. Future generations may never understand the simple genius of the Game Boy. Some of my earliest memories are of playing Super Mario World and Tetris 2 in the back of my Dad's "hot rod" (actually, a smoke-colored and cigarette-infused sedan). I wasn't very good at video games and, to be honest, I don't think most little kids are very good at them. It requires a bit of dedication for a five year old to sit in a car seat and figure out how to get Mario past the ridiculous obstacles you encounter in the title. Remember, we didn't really have game guides back then. Heck, the only game guide I ever had was for my Super Game Boy, which, by the way, is one of the most incredible cartridges you could buy for you SNES.

Pokemon, of course, was the title that changed everything. I remember when I got Pokemon Blue, I weaseled my way into getting it, if I remember, at the end of one summer. I became obsessed after getting a book about the original generation and learning all of their names, types, abilities, attacks, etc. in ad nauseum. I was pretty obsessed with Pokemon, but I wasn't ever really that good at it. For example, I don't think I've ever used a Master Ball, caught a Mewtwo, or exploited any of the glitches. Cuz I am a dork.

Today, portable gaming feels like it is being ruined by two factors; the industry, which makes poor decisions that focus more on hardware than software, and age; I find I have less and less time and compulsion to play portable games. My PSP is collecting dust and my DS consoles are lucky to get my attention for Mario titles and every new Pokemon installment.

Is the magic gone?

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/8/12.

wyrm/wurm [wurm]
noun
1. Mythology. The Germanic term for a European dragon, literally translated as "snake" or "serpent". Such creatures can take the typical form of a European dragon; the quadrupedal cat-like or bipedal scaly bird-like form with two talons, a long tail, large wings, and a long neck ending in a reptilian head, sometimes with feline features, or it can instead take the form of a great serpent which, in modern fantasy, is more common for this term.

EX. The wyrm rose up over the crest of the next ridge loosing white powder from the snowcaps and let out a bone-shivering roar. Its jaws dripping with a slick grease, the beast swelled as it roared again, "Yol Toor Shul!"

A series of flaming spheres flew from the beasts maw and toward the Dragonborn. Side-stepping the attack, the hero charged toward the creature, sword in hand, and responded in the dragon's own wicked tongue, "Fus Roh Dah!" Stunning the beast, just long enough, for our hero to charge directly at the beasts and take a swing at its vintage hide.

cuisine [kwi-zeen]
noun
1. A style or quality of cooking; cookery.
2. The foods and methods of preparation to a region or population. Major influencing factors include climate, availability, technology, economic factors, and religious beliefs.

EX. The sumptuous meal presented above is an example of some of the best cuisine that Skyrim has to offer from a hearty beef stew to the grilled lamb shanks to a carefully prepared side of potatos, grilled leek, cheese, bread, and a desert of sweet cakes.

Tune in next week for our ma's recipe for the bacon helmet.

WORD OF THE DAY! 3/26/12.

skald [skawld]
noun
1. An ancient Scandinavian poet, storyteller and/or singer.
2. A bard, a storyteller, a singer, a poet, etc.

EX. The skalds will sing songs of this day. The day that the "Human-Named-Finn" pursued a dungeon delve into the Guyver's Reach and struck down the Queen of the Spiders. One day, Finn would become king.

But that is a tale for another time...

WORD OF THE DAY! 12/13/11

surreptitious [sur-uhp-tish-uhs]
adjective
1. obtained, done, made, etc. by stealth, secrecy, or unauthorized activity.
2. acting in a stealthy way.

EX. I've noticed that little has changed in the world of enemy NPC AI in Skyrim. I can still manage to trick a barbarian into thinking he just imagined the arrows in his back by running to the back of his cave and being surreptitious until the eye-ball reticule returns to a slit and notifies me that I am hidden. Seriously, I've killed entire pirate dens and roving parties of Falmer this way. It just seems mean to pick on the incompetent like that.

WORD OF THE DAY! 12/11/11

trifling [trahy-fling]
adjective
1. dishonest; incorrect; nonsensical, ridiculous, off base.
2. of very little importance; trivial; insignificant.
3. mean, petty, worthless.
4. frivolous; shallow; light.
5. of small value, cost, or amount.
noun
6. idle or frivolous conduct.
7. foolish delay or waste of time.

EX. Exactly a month after Skyrim's release and it is still distracting me from school like an obnoxious ex-girlfriend trying to distract me from my work and make everything about her. I mean, holy hell, I have two exams tomorrow and a paper. I don't need to trifling about with Skyrim and Firefox. This procrastination is trifling.

MUSICAL MONDAY PRESENTS:
HARRY PARTRIDGE <3 SKYRIM

No one hates his characters more than Harry Partridge. In almost every cartoon he has ever posted on his channel on youtube and from way back when I saw his early work on Newgrounds, he has always been one of the cruelest creators in cartoon animation. Yet, there is one thing he loves. Skyrim. In the last few months he has posted three entire musical videos about Skyrim! Check them out BELOW!

WEEKLY ROUND-UP! 11/14-11/20 2011

WEEKLY ROUND-UP:
SKYRIM WEEK!

There are two kinds of gamers right now: gamers playing Skyrim and well, can't really call ya a gamer if ya ain't playing what may very well be the best game of the year (in a year of 10/10 titles!) Problem?

Anybody else agree with me that the gaming industry would be better off it they released about a fifth of their holiday titles in the summer? I would've done terrible things for a new Zelda to play over the summer months. Alas, I must backlog Skyward Sword until Christmas, along with Arkham City.

I had been itching to do a Musical Monday article on A Song for Ulvaak pretty much since I started this blog. I just needed the right occasion and the weekend after Skyrim came out just seemed so worth it. This awesome song is based on an ode from Patton Oswalt's book Zombie Spaceship Wasteland. Check it out!

Most immersive game I've ever played outside of D & D? Nuff said.

Oh yeah! And a new COD came out last week. MW3 is the fifth title I have purchased in five consecutive years in the COD franchise and I have to say it ranks above WaW and MW2 for me. If I wasn't so wrapped up in Skyrim this week, and my friends weren't so busy, I would be tearing some seriously multi-player time in this title. The thing is I love COD BUT this week, starting with an article posted yesterday, I am giving the series a fair shake by denouncing my top 11 nitpicks with the multiplayer. Check it out!

My friend SAKKET/pugfarts did this awesome Skyrim comic and I just had to share it with you guys. I've always admired his art style and still keep a couple drawings he made for me tucked away for a smile. And as someone who has been calling the game "Skrim" I am happy to see that he has such a similar responsible. Skirm indeed.

noun
1. Tibetan Folklore. A legendary, large, hairy, humanoid creature said to inhabit the Tibetan mountains.

EX. First I heard the beasts throaty and guttural call. I looked ahead of me on the Throat of the World and saw a terrifying silhouette against the snow. At first, I thought it was a Yeti or am Abominable Snowman. It leaped down from the ledge it was standing on and charged me full force. I threw fireballs at the beast until it was felled. It wasn't until after I could get a good luck at its smouldering corpse that I realized it was merely a frost troll.
