#209 SNUBBULL & #210 GRANBULL
Oh boy! This week is all about this pugnificent and pugnacious creatures known as Snubbull and Granbull; two of the so cute they're ugly second generation abominadorablinations based on the Bull Dog breed and, specifically, those old Tom and Jerry cartoon bull dogs. Spike and Tyke? I think those were their names? *googles* I watched too many cartoons growing up... I should read more. Anyways....
By all rights, Snubbull's design should make it one of the worst designed Pokémon of all time! Just look at it; bubblegum pink with baby blue spots and collar, with a body that makes a weird dress like thing, weird off-color feet, featureless forepaws, and four ear things that have black stripes for no apparent reason-- the individual who designed this was high on Quaaludes or my name is Professor Oak...and yet...
The result is simply smashing, darling! Somehow his bizarre appearance works best in animated format thanks to his rather bizarre design and "Grumpy Cat before it was cool to be grumpy" expression to give him this exotic and dignified look. Just look at that fellow chomping on his bone? And the New Yorker gangster accent they have coming out of his underbite muzzle? Simply marvelous.
Plus, any Pokémon that has the guts to get in a slap fight with Jigglypuff (the psychopathic stalker, serial killer, and wannabe pop star) is alright in my book.
Granbull is more arguably appealing in his design that makes him look like a real tuffy (and perfect Team Rocket companion, you would think). His purple pallet, big old tusky jaw, and black collar/armbands give him a real rough and tumble look.
He brings all the appeal of a bull dog into a purple cartoon form that makes him a delightful addition to the Pokémon world. Another nice thing I didn't even cover in the design is the clever decision to have him walk around on his back paws so he can sock his foes with a nice uppercut-- NICE!
AND THAT'S ALL FOLKS! TUNE IN NEXT WEEK FOR MORE POKÉMON IN OUR JOURNEY OF NOSTALGIA!
