NERDCULTURE SMACKDOWN! POKEMONS OF THE WEEK! FEB 9-15/13!

POKEMONS OF THE WEEK! FEB 9-15/13!
RAMPARDOS VS. BASTIODON!

This week we're looking at the two exceptionally unappealing dinosaur fossil Pokemons, #409 Rampardos & #411 Bastiodon! I'm gonna explain what I do and don't like about their designs and hopefully we'll learn something from the ramble about to rumble.

In theory, a pair of Pokemon based on the Pachycephalosaur & Triceratops dinosaurs should've been a slamdunk-- kids love Pokemon, kids love dinosaurs, and yet I don't love derpy looking dinosaur Pokemon. The even more unfortunate part is that the pairing had even more thought put into it, in terms of dynamic, because the pairing offset/compliment each other in the following ways: Rampardos is a biped and Bastiodon a quadraped, one is clearly a defensive wall and the other a sweeper, and they both have heads built to butt. Heck, their first stages in evolution are adorable, so its just unfortunate that they look so stupid.

Rampardos's handicap in the design department is based on the fact that he suffers from the syndrome of only looking any bit serious with his head tilted downward. From any other angle, his design quickly falls to pieces. His permanently derpy grin makes him look like an idiot. I like the horn placement, but there is just something off about the coloring that, in theory, should be cool.

Bastiodon is even less appealing with face/head that is supposed to resemble a castle-wall, but when combines with those eyes, the geometry of it all, the mouth (ugh), and the dull coloring we wind up with a rather unappealing mess of a Pokemon. He is even more flawed than Rampardos.

I suppose they were busy giving the cooler designs to the other awesome 4th Gen Pokemon because that that's the only way I could see them fumbling dinosaur + pokemon = ? Only the affectionate attention of fanart can make these Pokemon anything other than uncompetitive derposaur.
