WORD OF THE DAY! 1/30/15!

flumph [flumf]
noun
1. Dungeons and Dragons. First published in the 1st Edition Dungeons and Dragons book, The Fiend Folio, it is a Lawful Good aberration, from space/outer planes, resembling a glowing jellyfish with eye stalks that floats using air jets that make the noise that gives them their name. Surprisingly intelligent and wise, they live in well-organized and harmonious communities and communicate telepathically with other life forms. They, harmlessly, feed off the emotional energy of other beings and react to their emotions/behavior accordingly; they are attracted to good creatures and repelled by evil. Flumphs are quick to make friends with those that can look past their appearance and, generally, serve heroes in the fight against heroes by warning them of alien threats and assisting them in their own way.

EX. Out of all of the extremely silly monsters in Dungeons and Dragons history, the humble flumphs are my favorite.

The angle of appeal with these alien creatures is they look like some sort of random alien creatures that would swarm heroes and take part in something out of a bad Japanese hentai but, instead, are some of the nicest and most helpful creatures you will ever meet! These mini Flying Spaghetti monsters are like the pugs of D & D-- ugly, adorable and a little bit tragic. After all, most heroes would just assume they're horrible monsters and cut them down without giving them the opportunity to explain themselves. And that's a shame because, unlike many outer beings, Flumphs are not complete and utter tosspots.

My adventuring party in the Fifth Edition game I am currently playing in, as my human cleric of Lathander, Geth Dawnbraker, we met a Flumph! The pitiful creature seemed a little young, a little lost, and very distraught. It couldn't fly or, rather, it was afraid to fly! Immediately taking the little creature under his wing, Geth Dawnbreaker gave him an encouraging speech and, with a little divine intervention, sent the creature on it's way. And, with Geth making all sorts of deals and alignments with outsiders that might not have his best interests at heart, he'll need friends without ulterior motives that owe him a favor.

And a flumph is a good friend to have.

WORD OF THE DAY! 1/29/15!

kekkei genkai [keh-kehy-gen-kahy] / 血継限界
noun
1. Naruto. Literally translated as "a technique limited to inheritance by blood" or "Bloodline Limit", it is a special trait or collection of abilities passed down in the family. The most infamous type of such a limit is called a " dōjutsu" or "eye technique" like the Uchiha Clan's sharingan but the techniques can range from easily manipulating a combination of chakra types, being able to create completely unique type of chakra or having abnormal and unique physical qualities.

EX. Looks like Elsa has the same kekkei genkai as Haku.

No essay today. Simple but short of it: I like Frozen. I like Naruto. Let it go.

WTF WED! AN AMAZING ANIME WORLD OF ROBOTS, MONSTERS, & BARBARACLES!

Anime makes me smile. One such anime that I recently watched the first season of, in like two days, was The Devil is a Part Timer. It is a slice of life anime and, as far as I can tell, the appeal to such a show is going "oh that's cute" every ten minutes. It is a simple pleasure that I fear I don't want to cherish too much.

I also started Sword Art Online but took a hiatus from marathoning it to get back to finishing my Fringe marathon. Media consumption. Mmm...

I don't know anything about Gumball except that it is a European Cartoon Network production about a cat and his fish and stuff. But this animation is very cute.

That is all that has to be said, really. Deal with it.

BARBARACLE? BARBARACLE... BARBARACLE!

Sorry I don't have more to say. Just spent a couple hours trying to get Google websites, like blogger, to work. I am tired and irritated. Good day.

"TOTALLY NOT MONDAY" MUSIC TUESDAY! LEAGUE OF LEGENDS: CURSE OF THE SAD MUMMY!

League of Legends is the world's most played PC game.

League of Legends or LoL is a free-to-play MOBA or "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena" game.
MOBAs are action real time strategy games where teams pick from a pool of characters and attempt to complete objectives in order to earn points or take an ultimate objective (ex. destroy the enemy base). LoL is a direct spiritual successor to the popular "Defense of the Ancients:Arena" World of Warcraft 3 mod that popularized the game genre for many in the PC community (with LoL's biggest competitor being the official sequel DoTA 2). Despite the genre exploding in recent years with other developers making their own copy cats of the format and others making their own mark (ex. Smite, the First Person MOBA), League of Legends has managed to remain popular and relevant.

I think a big part of  the game's popularity is its characters or "champions". In fact, I don't remember where, but I read someone giving the opinion that perhaps, while they  liked some other MOBA's mechanically more than League of Legends, that LoL has extremely well designed characters that players can get identify and invest into on several levels. Maybe a player can connect with the cartoony art style or the lore or the playstyle or even the music.

Amumu is such a character that has several hooks:

Amumu the Sad Mummy was released in the first year of League of Legends, back in 2009, and the core of the character's back-story revolves around a mystery: a mummy boy wakes up in a tomb in Shurima with no memories and incredible sadness. There are a lot of hooks to be had in such a simple story:

Why did Amumu awaken? Is he a boy or a yordle? Who was he? Why can't he remember who he was? Why is Amumu so sad?

And other tidbits of lore add more questions. An old story told by a one-armed man depicts him releasing Amumu and, when Amumu touched his arm, it shriveled up and became dead. Does this mean Amumu can't make friends or simply can't touch anyone without cursing them too? Is Amumu cursed? Can Amumu make friends? After all, it said that Annie was his friend in the old lore.

And then from there the other appealing features of Amumu are his rather simple but cute design and how those design choices affect his satisfying gameplay. Amumu is a bobble-headed mummy boy with a cute voice that sniffles, snobs, and explodes into a tantrum. These are all worked into his game mechanics in clever ways.

And he is cute.

And now he has a song with a Tim Burton-esque music video. Sweet.

Also, because Riot was feeling generous here is there new Music of League of Legends playlist, which you can download for free!
