It's my birthday.

I like sharing weird stuff. The Star Wars Holiday Special is a weird example. How weird? It is the only thing George Lucas is associated with that he, and I quote...

"If I had time and a hammer, I'd track down every bootleg copy and smash it."

And, if that isn't a glowing recommendation, I don't know the definition of "glowing recommendation" or George Lucas is capable of being embarrassed by a poorly conceived cash-in on his big cash cow.

Also, I just really enjoy watching these guys shoot the $#!7!

1. League of Legends. The annual seasonal event in League of Legends that as come every Winter since 2009. The event has a heavy winter theme, with a focus on snow/ice themes & Christmas themes, usually involving a snowy paint of coat on a map/s, gifting events, special bundles, legacy skins, special sales, and other promotions.

Last year's Snowdown Showdown skins were pretty great.

This year we got a poro themed game mode, Legend of the Poro King and a whole new slew of special legacy skins and icons.

Here are the amaze-balls icons:

I have them all. A cool note? If you equip the Snowdown Poro icons, directly above, before playing Legend of the Poro King, your poros will be especially skinned in those five themes.

And now, let's look at the three Snowdown Showdown 2014 skins...

WINTER WONDERLAND ORIANNA!

Orianna is both a beautiful and sad character to begin with (she is a robot made by a father to replace his deceased daughter) and there is something haunting about this skin. The graceful animations, the sharp textures giving it an ornament like quality, and those piercings eyes make this a unique skin. The only mark I can take against it is that the Poro deathball, while cute, detracts from the character's themes a little too much. Maybe a giant snowflake would've been better? Fragile, beautiful, and fleeting. 4/5.

SNOWDAY MALZAHAR!

Poro minions are going to make this my default skin for Malzahar but, much like the Winter Ops themed Varus skin, I feel like the snow mask and other winter gear don't feel especially unique to the character. 4/5.

PORO RIDER SEJUANI!

This is pretty much the perfect skin for me; Sejuani is decked out in a snow going outfit that perfectly compliments the pink cheeks and tongue of her mount and, as her mount is a giant poro and her weapon is a poro snack on the end of a leash, I am smitten with this perfect Snowdown skin. 5/5.

TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

I actually got the 5th Edition Player's Handbook (two of them by accident) for Christmas and I gotta say, after playing the system from Level 1 to Level 6 that it is a pretty decent little system that blend mechanics from 3rd and 4th editions and incorporates in some nice improvements/innovations that make the game feel like classic D & D but less convoluted than 4th edition's more video game like mechanics.

On the other hand, here are spoony's opinions which range from profound to whiny-- because that is how all nerd opinions go. Or have you not been reading my blog?

For my friend's Christmas get-together this year we exchanged gifts and played Super Smash Bros. for Wii-U. As per usual, things got a little salty, people cursed loudly and let out cries of agony as they were mother f***ing smashed and feelings were hurt. But, after a trip to Dairy Queen and a few rounds of Ultimate Werewolf, we remembered the true meaning of Christmas.

All Villagers are a**holes.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE TREES!

 This year my Mother put up three Christmas trees:

Our usual Christmas tree with all of our ornaments (of which I am especially fond of the Disney ornaments but my favorite is probably the Greedo & Han Solo Cantina Scene Diorama), a patriotic red, white, and blue tree and a snowman tree.

The trees are taking over.

(As some have taken to calling the new "Legend of the Poro King" game mode).

Last year, we all celebrated, with childish glee, the Snowdown Showdown mode (I as much as everyone with several articles) and this year Riot pulls out the stops with a new game mode set on Howling Abyss where your summoner spells are replaced by Poro Toss, which allows you to toss poro balls, and To the King, which allows you to pull yourself to the Poro King. What's that? Who's the Poro King?

Oh, well, when your team makes ten contacts with your enemy, you summon the powerful building destroying Poro King! This makes this mode a mad dash to get 10 hits first and then to protect/destroy the king, depending on who controls him, as he makes his merry march towards the enemy Nexus.

I may be biased, because I love poros, but this is a pretty fun game mode. My favorite moment has been getting a quadrakill as Vel'Koz (who is now disabled) by using Poro Toss to hit a Lee Sin, watch him kick to safety, and then pulling to him to kill him and his teammates with a well-placed face-melting ult. Stay tuned for the next couple of days for articles on the Poro ward skins/icons and the new Snowdown 2014 skins (they all include poros in some form)!

But nothing is more disconcerting than the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who (I need to do more Nerd Culture Smackdowns in 2013). On a related note, I've been playing New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS and just got done with a cute Boo level. Now I just need Luigi's Mansion to come out for the 3DS and I can have all my creepy whistles and hear Luigi call out, "Maaaarriiiiiiioo!"

3. WORD OF THE DAY! 12/25/12. A Christmas Carol.

I think that few things have become more Christmasy for me than watching Dr. Who. And no I haven't seen the Christmas Special yet because I'm a dork.

2. MIXED BAG. SUPER MARIO 64 REVIEW!

I've been wanting to review Super Mario 64 for a little while now and my entire premise for playing it last month was to do the review. Huzzah.

1. MIXED BAG. TABLETOP: CONAN MUNCHKIN REVIEW!

And the top article in a week of amazing articles has gotta be my review of Munchkin Conan or Conan Munchkin....cuz we end up calling it both. Anywho, it was fairly tricky to think up a way to review a boardgame/cardgame etc. but I feel the simple system I worked out is effective. The next games I plan to review include: Elder Sign, Arkham Horror, Gloom, Small World, and, at some point, games like Hero's Quest and Castle Ravenloft. As for video games, I should review Mega Man X (1-3), Pokemon Black II, Mass Effect 3, and Magic Quest Starring Mickey Mouse. As for films I should review, I owe you guys a reviews of the Hobbit and Django Unchained. If any of those strike you in particular and you wanna see them ASAP, lemme know in the comments below.

P.S. I am excited for the Magic pre-release for the newest expansion Gatecrash, but don't know what Guild I am going to choose...yet. The only guild I know for sure I don't want to play is Dimir.

This is probably my favorite Christmas related internet thing of 2012--is it for everyone? No. Hellbenders is definitely the sort of cartoon enjoyed by someone like me who has a very specific mix of enjoyment from a) things that surprise me and b) things that are a little disturbing. As a piece of internet animation, its pretty nice too.

Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol [ehy-kris-muhs-kar-uhl]

EX. One of the best episodes of the newer Doctor Who series starring the Eleventh Doctor, portrayed by Matt Smith (I like him), is the Christmas special that is simply titled "A Christmas Carol". In the episode, rather than simple making a retread of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol with Dr. Who characters or having the Doctor interrupt the story (as if it was real), instead we find our hero trying to save Amy Pond and Rory Williams from crashing in the sky above a strange city that resembles Victorian London on an alien world. The Doctor soon finds himself getting involved in the transforming the powerful miser Kazran Sardick (Michael Gambon) through the power of Christmas and love. The performance of Gambon and Smith is very strong in the episode, the special implementation of the themes of Dickens in a sci-fi setting are subtle and effective, and the special gives you just that right Christmasy feeling that I feel several of the other Doctor Who Christmas specials lack.

Fun fact, Christmas is a very important holiday in Doctor Who canon (the most popular of the recent Doctors, David Tennant's 10th Doctor, was regenerated on the day).

I have to say I've kinda come to enjoy Animeme's videos that take the internet's most popular memes and animate them for our enjoyment. This video linked above is, perhaps, just a little rough but I think you'll enjoy it. Insanity Wolf is one of the scarier memes out there, but the voice they gave him in the videos are pretty sweet.

EX. I don't often find myself feeling the holiday blues, in fact this is my favorite time of year (more time to spend with friends and family, excellent films, Christmas, and my birthday to name a few reasons), and yet, I think I can understand the sentiment. As you get older, it can become difficult to see the magic of this season-- it becomes more artificial, more commercial and, if you become distant from friends and family, it seems like a long lost dream. My advice? Try to connect with loved ones, make new friends, and volunteer to help others.

Like Ebenezer Scrooge in Dickens' A Christmas Carol, this is a good time of year to revisit the past, evaluate the present, and consider the future. At least, that's what I tend to do...
