WORD OF THE DAY! 10/5/13! POKÉLEAKS #1

powder puff [pow-der-puf]
noun
1. A soft pad or ball of fluffy material used for applying cosmetic powder to the skin.

EX. Rather than talk about the lame powder puff evolutions of Spritzee & Swirlix, Aromatisse & Slurpuff, both Fairy types, posted in the image above, I want to talk about a decision I made.

After seeing leaks of the final stages of the starter Pokémon (which I will share after the jump since picking your starter is important), I have decided to only post information that is spoiled officially on X & Y leading up to the release rather than the information being leaked daily since copies hit the streets of Italy & Canada.

Nintendo has taken action against some leakers, powder puff soft action, and it is understandable since they don't want people ruining the simultaneous worldwide release. On that note, I want to share the info on the final stages of the starters (I promise this will be the last leak before the official release) enjoy and warning, spoilers ahead (I will re-release the info when this stuff becomes official):

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/4/13!

cat burglar [kat-bur-gler]
noun
1. A burglar who breaks into buildings by climbing through upstairs windows, across roofs, etc., especially with great stealth and agility.

EX. After watching the entirety of the Batman the Animated series, I still find the DC Universe's greatest cat burglar to be, at best, a somewhat odd and selfish, self-righteous vigilante/crook and, at worst, a complete crazy catlady.

Also, sometimes I need to take a knock at cats. Between T.S. Eliot, Broadway, & the Internet, we've put them up on a pedestal. THIS (below) is how we used to treat our feline villains (and now I don't mean you should hit your cat, pretty much ever, take a joke(pretty sure it's a puppet)).

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/3/13!

balefire [behyl-fahyer]
noun
1. A large fire out in the open; a bonfire.
2. A signal fire, shot, or beacon.
3. A funerary pyre.

EX. This is a balefire, a signal, a sign that the folks making X & Y are listening; not only do they release an intense new Pokémon anime but a new Megaevolution form for Charizard. Not just a new form, but the form we wanted and we (and he) deserve. Mega Charizard X is a Fire/Dragon type with the ability Tough Claws to enhance his physical contact moves.

I'm so glad I preordered X. The only downside? Do I neglect Mega Torchic and use Mega Charmander as my fire starter (this will be the first gen I know I'm not picking a fire starter from Gen 6)? Hm... maybe the other starters will have alternate mega evolutions that are just as badass as Mega Charizard X? Only time, spoilers, (and more leaks) will tell.

WTF WED! GAY ARNOLD & THOR GO TO THE CANDY SHOP FOR PEZ DISPENSORS & LOLLIPOPS!

This is one of those things that I was concerned that I only I could enjoy-- as both a big fan of Hey Arnold! and a general weirdo who enjoys abridged voice acting stuff-- but this won't over pretty big at my latest hangout with the gang. In fact, they insisted we watch it twice! This is the sort of thing that is offensive to some and just weird to others, but I found the whole thing so funny that I gotta admire the suggestion that there be more stuff on youtube like this.

We've had our abridged animes and rifftrax, but I want to see my favorite cartoons given the same treatment. Just take like the weirdest episodes of any given Nicktoon, of which there were many, and you have comedy gold on your hands.

This is a slam dunk sorta video that, perhaps if it had been more timely near the release of the original film or The Avengers, I wouldn't be surprised to see it catapulted to the status of viral hit with it's creative format, great set-up, and amazing performance from good ol' Stamper.

I like Thor but is has it's problems. It is directed by one of my favorite directors and has a bizarrely chosen mix of top tier actors giving Shakespearean performances, usually as the most minor roles in the film, and over the top scenery chewing from the rest. But that's great. I've always found Anthony Hopkins performance to be the perfect fit for this kitshy sword & sorcery film.

Last but not least is the latest lovely bit of animation from Cartoon Hangover, Doctor Lollipop, mixing the mashed up bits of medical drama satire and fairy tale frippery into a fine paste to fix our sweet tooths. This candy-coated creation fits right into the catalog of cartoons produced in the past by Cartoon Hangover and, with a cast of talking critters and fairy tale folk, I'm excited to see what quirky cases our equine quack takes on next in his medical quest.

And that's all folks. Do you like spiders?

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/2/13!

herculean [her-kyoo-lee-uhn]
adjective
1. Something requiring the strength of Hercules, or other considerable power, to accomplish.
2. Having enormous strength, size, power, etc.
3. Of or pertaining to labors of Hercules.

EX. It sure seemed like a herculean effort for JonTron to finally get around to posting a new video for the "Season 2 of JonTron" he promises us, amirite!? But seriously, jk, this video is a return to form for our master of the whimsical video game review in the format of a theme montage of mostly monstrous games based on the Greek mythic hero, Hercules.

If you need another reason to get excited... JonTron dances.

Also, "Who put the 'glad' in gladiator?" is an obnoxious anachronism that has no place in the Disney's Hercules film, which has plenty worse anachronism, because gladiators... ARE ROMAN!

WEEKLY ROUND-UP! SEP. 23- SEP. 29 2013!

WEEKLY ROUND-UP PRESENTS
TOSS YOUR PIKACHU WEEK!

7. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/27/13! Eject.

Why toss a Pikachu, when you can toss a bear trying to eat your salmon? And, by "bear", I mean a stuntman in a very cheap, unconvincing bear suit. What? Did they think people were drooling idiots in the '70s?

6. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/25/13! OTP!

I personally don't have any particular OTPs although I oppose Naruto x Hinata because I find Hinata to be an annoying bore.

5. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/28/13! Mother figure.

"Look at what I made... Do you want it? No. You sure? Okay." And the Mother Tyranitar left and Ash missed out on catching another powerhouse for his team. Baka...

4. WORD OF THE DAY! 9/29/13! Handheld.

Handheld titles I'm looking forward to playing: Pokémon X, Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds & Fire Emblem Awakening). Right now, I'm playing Pokémon Black 2 & FF: Tactics Advance.

3. WTF WED! AN ELEPHANT WATCHES A PSA ABOUT RACISM & FRENCH-KISSING!

Not much to be said here. 90's TV was pretty obsessed with morals, which is, at least, better than the YOLO reality TV crap on every frickin' channel these days.

2. MUSIC MON! DAN BULL & GTA 5, TEENAGE GIRLS & IMAGINARY BOYS, and SERIOUSLY, F*** TEEMO!

I've been playing a lot of League of Legends lately. I've also gotten back into TF2. My favorite class in TF2 is still, probably, the Pyro because because I love catching spies. What's your fave class?

1. TABLETOP TALES: MY THEROS PRE-RELEASE "WHITE/BLUE BAG OF WINDS!"

I rode into battle on Fleetfeather Sandals and my Cavalry on the backs of Pegasi. We had Heliod on our side, but not even his guiding light could illuminate the hands dealt to our foes. Our reactions slowed, our march came to a stop still, and the crashing tragedy of our tempo coming to a halt filled the battlefield. The Fates were not kind that day.

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/1/13!

spoiler [spoi-ler]
noun
1. Person or thing that spoils.
2. A person who robs or ravages; despoiler; plunderer.
3. Aeronautics. A device used to break up the airflow around an aerodynamic surface, as an aircraft wing, in order to slow the movement through the air or to decrease the lift on the surface and, as a result, provide bank or descent control.
4. Automotive. a similar device for changing the airflow past a moving vehicle, often having the form of a transverse fin or blade mounted at the front or rear to reduce lift and increase traction at high speeds.
5. Sports. A team out of final contention that defeats a potential or favored contender and thereby thwarts its chances of winning a championship.
6. Any competitor, entrant, or candidate who has no chance of ultimate victory but does well enough to spoil the chances of another.
7. An important plot point/s or moment/s being described that could spoil the contents of a story to another member of the audience that has not gotten that far in the narrative.

EX. I'm only about four or five seasons into Breaking Bad. I'm a new fan. Please, no spoilers.

WORD OF THE DAY! 9/30/13!

mighty [mahy-tee]
adjective
1. Having or characterized by impressive strength, power, or size.
2. Huge; large, etc.
3. Great in amount, extent, degree, etc.
adverb
4. Informal. Extremely, very, etc.
noun
5. The great, powerful, large, important, etc.

EX. I know I'm late to the party when it comes to sharing this info-- after all, the kickstarter for Mighty No. 9 ends in a day-- but I want everyone who hasn't got a chance to check out this incredible project to press the eyeballs to the screen and take in all of the mighty majesty that is this Mega Man spiritual successor.

Mega Man is one of the most beloved 2D platformer/metroidvaniaesque games of all time, making it's mark on the console market first during the NES days and building a strong legacy through the SNES years with several impressive sequels and spin-offs. Some time after the Mega Man X series, the franchise started going downhill and, after an attempted nostaglic revival of the franchise's iconic gameplay and style with Mega Man 9 and 10, Capcom has seemed to let the franchise fall by the wayside and into the no-man's land of being an existing franchise that it's owners don't seem very interested in when they could instead put out more lazy Streetfighter IV sequels and Resident Evil games. The man who was with Mega Man since the very beginning is one of his creators, Kenji Inafune, legendary game designer (pictured above). After 23 years, Inafune left Capcom in 2010 to pursue new opportunities. So, what does he do?

How about head a spiritual successor to Mega Man with kickstarter that has people almost more excited than if he and Capcom had announced an actual sequel to the series? Mighty No. 9 is an ambitious project but is clearly has the pedigree in it's production team to make an amazing game that combines the best of both worlds, between nostalgia and modern visuals, with an HD platformer with gorgeous graphics, mighty fine music, and gameplay that's as good, if not better, than ever! Plus, the hero's name is Beck. I can dig it.

They're only a few hundred thousand short of releasing the title on next gen consoles and handhelds so, if you wanna play it on those mediums, donate a little cash now! If you wanna find out more about the process, check out the first part in the documentary series on the franchise HERE.

MUSIC MON! POGO'S CATCHATRONIC, DUCKS IN OUTERSPACE, & ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER'S HUNGER GAMES!

So, with less than two weeks to go until the release of Pokémon X & Y, the hype is really starting to build with all sort of supposed leaks hitting the interwebs (examples here), and I'm pretty excited to share my experiences with my readers when I get my copy of Pokémon X. For reference, my record has been thus so far: Blue, Yellow, Gold, Crystal, Ruby, Emerald, Pearl, Black, Black 2. So, technically I screwed up my pattern by buying X instead of Y. See if you can see the pattern and feel free to share you history.

In the meanwhile, check out this newest video (above) from the whimsical remix master, Pogo.

I'm a huge fan of brentalfloss and loved sharing his work in the past. It's actually great to see other artists doing covers of his work, especially covers this fun, and this sort of multi-layered fan media is simply indicative of the complexity of internet entertainment. How many more layers of fan meta-tainment can we expect?

The Running Man is cheesy, ridiculous and, more often than not, full-on dumb. And yet... it is also a well-shot action film with some great chemistry & character charisma and the over-the-top entertainment we can only get from a classic Arnold Schwarzenegger film where a few performances make all the stupidity fall into the background and allow you to appreciate this film's not-so-subtle satire of modern times.

The Hunger Games is stylish, emotional, and full of poignant moments. And yet... it also suffers from being shot by a person having a seizure, pulls its punches more often than not, and, for long stretches, is boring as dirt and lacks any tension or energy.

The Running Man may be dumb, but it's dumb fun. The Hunger Games may be smarter, but it's sterile. I like both of them, though, for different reasons. What do you think?

WORD OF THE DAY! 9/29/13!

handheld [hand-held]
noun
1. Short for "handheld console", it is a portable video game console meant to be held in the hands.

EX. I have owned the following handhelds: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, PSP, Nintendo DS XL, and Nintendo 3DS. My favorite handheld?

Probably my Lime Green Game Boy SP.

It can play all my Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games, was portable enough to fix in my pocket, has great button placement, the screen is the right size and bright, the clamshell design works and hasn't broken, and it is in one of my favorite colors.

The best console is probably the Nintendo DS... hard to pick a model between the Lite and the XL. The Lite could play Advance games, but the XL is so big and has all the special features that the later DS consoles brought.

What's your favorite handheld?
