WORD OF THE DAY! 6/29/12.

barbaric [bahr-bar-ik]
adjective
1. Without civilizing influences; uncivilized; primitive.
2. Of, like, or befitting barbarians: a barbaric empire.
3. Crudely rich or splendid: barbaric decorations.
EX.  "...the training of these poor creatures to turn them into fighting machines is simply barbaric -- barbaric." -Robert Byrd (D-WV).

While, a controversial individual, accused of racism and involvement in the KKK in the past, his quote from the Michal Vick dog-fighting case really stands out because of the sincerity of it and...the fact that it sounds like a quote from a movie. Heck, I wouldn't have been surprised if that was a quote from the end of the very hypocritical conclusion to Pokemon: The First Movie.

BTW, Pokemon are technically animals and then they're technically not. From the anime, it is pretty clear that they're sentient creatures and, within their universe, pokemon seem to be okay with the situation and their fights are more about sparring than anything. In reality, of course, you could argue that these fights would not really knock anyone out, that the pokemon would be injured or killed, or you could even point out some of the weirder bits of pokemon lore, but that doesn't change that within its own universe...it all works.

WTF WEDNESDAY! TEAM ROCKET IS BACK!

 WTF WEDNESDAY PRESENTS

My old friend Matt "Mapp Pears" Pierce AKA SAKKET AKA pugfarts has made some interesting animation over the years. In particular, some of his most popular videos involve Pokemon characters, in particular Wooper, but today's subject video focuses on combining his most disturbing invention with everyone's favorite inept villains, Team Rocket. You can watch it by clicking the link above, or if you want to see his other pokemon related videos, click one of the many links below.
Maybe its just me, but every time I see one of his videos pop up on my subscription feed I feel my heart do a happy little cart wheel. In a style that emulates the most bizarre lows of Japanese animation with the most delightful highs of shows like Adventure Time with Finn and Jake and  The Misadventures of Flapjack, his cartoons are almost always guaranteed to make someone in the room uncomfortable. But hey, if you find whimsy and gleeful exuberance to be uncomfortable than why are you watching cartoons to begin with?

WINGO!

"The brief was to portray Disney princesses enjoying a little tea party but they all had to be portrayed the same age as their respective movies (for example Snow White would be 75 years old, Aurora 53, Belle 21, Rapunzel 2 etc). " - Taija Vigilia

WORD OF THE DAY! 1/27/12

schematics [skeh-mat-ikz]
noun
1. A structural or procedural diagram/design.

EX. The above schematics of a Pokéball explains the technical processes that allow a pokéball to function, as well as the different varieties of pokéballs one may find across the various regions of the Pokémon world, their values, and specialized functions.

The process that allows pokéballs to operate is adequately summarized in the second diagram. Such devices have two functions; the transfer of matter into energy and the management of complex data storage.

Every time you capture a Pokémon or return one to a pokéball, the creature is, in fact, destroyed or deconstructed. Their genetic structure and experiences are turned into energy, the energy is store in complex processors in the poké ball and when you release a Pokémon, the creature is reconstructed by turning energy into matter that is, for all intensive purposes, the same creature that the ball deconstructed.

A similar process is used in the Star Trek transporter system and Willie Wonka's Shrink Machine.

Christopher Robin looked down at his former figment with a satisfied frown, "Don't worry, my silly old bear." He looked at his watch, "Calvin and Hobbes won't be reaching their honey if I have anything to say about it."

WEEKLY ROUND-UP! 12/5-12/11 2011

WEEKLY ROUND-UP:
"WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH" WEEK

It has been a month since we dived into Skyrim. I've put a day or more worth of hours into the game and I still haven't scratched the surface of the Nordic homeland. It is the most immersive single player game on the market, right now, and if you don't have it...WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!

WARNING! After a good six hour session of Skyrim you may look down at your hands, expect an inventory menu to pop up, and then expect to be able to equip an Elven War Axe in your right hand and a Conjure Atronach spell in the other.

Captain Strong needs to return to DC Universe tomorrow. If US-1 was good enough for an awesome cameo with a space-traveling semi, than I want to see an immortal sailor man who runs on "sauncha" and fights alongside Aquaman. Steal my idea theoretical comic book writer or artist reading this!

I always wondered if Link ate the hearts of his enemies to regain his strength, but always assumed the faeries healed him in exchange for being released. I am a big fan of fantasy from the monster or minion perspective as you can see in the little short vignette provided as an example.

You can tell I am psyched about the article writing that I'm going to get back to over break. Its been a while since I wrote entire articles about my words of the day, and the two big ones I did this week were a lot of fun to write. If there are any heroes you'd like to see me research and feature, leave a comment below.

And Booster Gold is the man.

The world needs more Superman. The character has received a lot of flak for two primary reasons: he is not as a cool as Batman and he is a big target. The golden standard of super heroism, Superman is as timeless a character as Batman, and deserves to be given the same treatment that Batman has received in his various evolutions.

Some cynical people out there want gritty and dark super heroes and claim that the altruism of older super heroes is ridiculous. But to quote Superman, "What's so funny about Truth, Justice and the American Way?"

It really was a lot of fun finding all these ridiculous magazine covers and captioning them for you guys. Perhaps I was a little hard on the men that subscribed to these magazines, because I think if they reissued these into a collection I would buy it in a heart beat. Is it ridiculous, chauvinistic, and basically socially wrong in every sense? You bet. But it's also hilarious.

I am pretty proud of silly little scribbles that I drew last Thursday. It was a lot of fun drawing pocket monsters in my cartoonish style. If you're wondering why I didn't color them-- its a mix of laziness and a oddball pleasure in grayscale art. I'd like to draw more of these pokemans over break and maybe I'll color some of them. Heck, maybe I'll make it a challenge to post at least one pokemon a day on my blog. Just gotta wait to get a head start. Also, pokemon themed christmas cards for my friends. Huzzah!

espirit de corps [e-spree-de-kawr]
noun
1. a sense of unity and common interests and/or responsibilities, as developed by a group of persons closely associated in a task, cause or enterprise.

Here are some things that got my attention today. (Oh and Happy Birthday Pop!)

PORTAL 2 WHEATLEY PUPPET!
This video is a few days old but, after seeing it again for about the sixteenth time, it is still one of the coolest things among cool fan things made by Portal fans. I am blown away by this puppet, this video and honestly, if this puppet maker doesn't already have an awesome job, I'm looking at you Henson Studios and/or Disney, she should!
