WORD OF THE DAY! 9/16/14!

Club Nintendo [kluhb-nin-ten-doh]
noun
1. The customer loyalty program ran by Nintendo that rewards feedback and purchases with special access to content, the ability to trade in "earned coins" for exclusive merchandise, and even the ability to get free games.

EX. I broke down and really invested into Club Nintendo when I got a Wii-U last year and, being a Platinum member, the investment has totally paid off; I got free New Super Mario Bros straps for my Nintendo Wii remotes and a free copy of Game & Wario. And then I got an e-mail from Nintendo the other day and look at this:

The demo version of Super Smash Bros for 3DS, a week early, that has unlimited play time. Thank you Nintendo! I played the new Smash back in June and I've been craving it ever since. Sure, the demo just has Pikachu, Mario, Link, Villager, and Mega Man.... BUT I FRICKIN' LOVE IT!

And all the news from the Japanese release of the game has me salivating for October 3rd to arrive already! I'm buying a 3DS XL for this release! I love being a Nintendo fan right now.

The best part? I also got three codes for my friends so I can spread the hype-- er, I mean, joy of playing one of the year's most anticipated games early.

This is the part where most bloggers would be handing over their codes to commenters or worse, but I'm afraid I already gave them away. But, hey, no hard feelings, right?

Hey, what's with the hammer? Wait! Calm down! Stop!

MEGA MEN! BACK ME UP HERE!

MIXED BAG. LET'S PLAY PHOENIX WRIGHT: ACE ATTORNEY! CASE #1! "A TIME TO KILL!"

Welcome to my third Let's Play series. It has been a couple weeks and, between a busy social life and technical difficulties, I have been unable to record. Yet, in a stroke of mad genius, me and my best friend Yeti (Zach Stanifer) came together to give you guys another take on Let's Play with the first session of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney playthrough.

Phoenx Wright: Ace Attorney is the first title in the hit Ace Attorney series that has spanned Nintendo handhelds from the GBA to the 3DS and follows the career of Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney. Each game is a visual novel where the players listen to the case and look at the evidence to discover contradictions in the prosecution's case. Simple, but fun.

In the case, Yeti and I got to flex our voice acting chops and had a blast solving the case in this legal dystopia.

Check it out the link at the top or below.

If you like this video, make sure to check out the other videos on my channel, like, comment, and subscribe. And don't worry, we plan to do more Phoenix Wright soon and to continue our Pokémon series.

MUSIC MON! PHOENIX WRIGHT OBJECTS TO BOOTIES ROCKIN' EVERYWHERE!

I think I always had plans to do a Let's Play of Phoenix Wright, but it was brentalfloss's newest homage that inspired me to finally play a series I've been curious about for so long. Phoenix Wright is a portable Nintendo franchise that is part animated novel and part puzzle game. The gameplay, as far as I can tell from my first case, is pretty simple but satisfying-- you listen to the fact, look at the evidence, and point out contradictions in the prosecution's case.

Hopefully, I'll have the first session of the Mixed Bag's Let's Play of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney posted on youtube some time this week.

So, confession time, because I can do that, because technically this is still my blog-- I forgot my best friend's birthday this year. I called him to ask if he wanted to hang out on Monday only to quickly figure out the reason that Zach was acting so strange was that I had forgotten his birthday. I've been pretty busy lately, hence the lack of posts on the blog, and had lost the date in the shuffle. Quickly, I scrambled to save the day; I arranged a ride to his house and picked up Fire Emblem: Awakening for the 3DS (after all, the only other 3DS game he owns? Pokémon X). I also texted my friends to make sure they knew to meet up and we spent the day hanging out, going to the mall, and playing badminton. The lesson of the story?

Redemption is always a possibility.

And booty, yes booty, rockin' everywhere, rockin' everywhere...

Let's end with some other news in my life, in no general order, just stream of conciousness:

I bought a couple of board games to review for Tabletop Tales, I've been working on an interesting new Dungeons & Dragons setting (not sure if I wanna use Pathfinder or another system to run it), I went and saw Godzilla (3/5), my friend AceofSpadesCard became a father to his first daughter Evelynn and I joined him for a 24 hour game marathon for charity (for about 12 hours of it since I had to work that day), my friend Valerie graduated college and became engaged to my number one friend Justin, I went to a housewarming part for my friends Chris & Laura, Zach and Katherine got a pitbull puppy named Indi (after Indiana Jones and his family dog), I plan to see the new X-Men movie soon (even it blows), I love playing the newest LoL Champion Braum, I bought some new Steam games for Let's Play, my Aunt Debbie graduated college, I canceled my ESO subscription, my Pokémon hat gives me super powers of starting conversations, I am considering shaving my beard so I can finally try cosplaying at a con, I'm super stoked for Guardians of the Galaxy & Mario Kart 8, Game of Thrones is super good, and...

I threw out my back earlier today lifting too many bags of dogfood and have been in pain all day, but I still managed to write a new blog post. Thanks for reading and please keep checking in for updates, because this Summer is gonna be good.

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/15/14!

alpha and omega [al-fah-and-oh-meg-uh]
noun
1. Christianity. "The beginning of the end." (Revelations 1.8) The term comes from an appellation of Jesus, "I am the beginning and the end" but is not commonly found in older biblical texts and editions.
2. The basic or essential element of elements.
3. The first and last letters of the Greek alphabet.

EX. Seriously? Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? Hoenn is confirmed just in time for the apocalypse, fellas, just like you wanted, apparently. I gotta admit that no one is surprised by this predicament, but I'm a little disappointed to see no Emerald version since that is pretty much my favorite Pokémon game of all time.

Still, this means we'll probably get more mega evolutions and I would shocked if they don't include elements from Emerald. I just hope it comes with a Pokéwalker.

POKÉBLOG 2014 #3 NEW ANIME- POKÉMON X & Y: STRONGEST MEGA EVOLUTION. ACT 1!

obi [oh-bee]
noun
1. A long, broad sash tied around the waist, usually over a kimono.

EX. Why the heck is the new Pokémon protagonist wearing a rope-like kabuki-style obi around his neck? It's either that or a feather boa... and I'm not sure that the team behind the Pokémon anime is necessarily that forward thinking. Well, maybe he gets his fashion sense from Mega Ampharos?

WEEKLY ROUND-UP! NOV. 4- NOV. 10 2013!

WEEKLY ROUND-UP PRESENTS
PSYCHIC MEGA-EVOLUTION WEEK!

BTW, why don't we have a Mega-Reuinclus escapes me. The Mega-missed out there.

7. WORD OF THE DAY! 11/5/13! ESP!

If I had psychic powers, I probably would use them for the good of mankind. I promise not to use them to win Jeopardy, perform magic shows, and partake in INCEPTION-style voyeurism minus all of the high-concept, little explanation equipment.

6. WORD OF THE DAY! 11/10/13! POKÉBLOG X #4 WONDER TRADE.

I need to get my butt in-gear breeding decent Pokémon so I can Wonder Trade them away like a Russian orphanage with bills to pay... Wait. That was a depressing simile. There is nothing funny about neglected children. Now I'm sad. Way to go Wonder Trade!

5. WORD OF THE DAY! 11/4/13! POKÉBLOG X #3 FROM VANIVILLE TO SANTALUNE!

Um, seriously, don't google Professor Sycamore or his perfect hair & perfect abs.

4. WTF WED! IT'S MADE OUT OF F***ING POKÉMON & CHIN CHIN !?

The internet. It's made out of f***ing cookies...

3. MUSIC MON! BEST VIDEO GAME DAYMAN NINJA SEX PARTY IN PHILLY!

If I learned anything from Ninja Scroll, Ninja Sex usually involves snake-gina jutsu.

2. WORD OF THE DAY! 11/6/13! (魔法少女) Mahou Shoujo / Majokko.

I'm afraid the episode I linked in the article is no longer available but, remember, google is always near.

1. TABLETOP TALES! COMMANDER FORMAT! (WORD OF THE DAY! 11/9/13!)

I was really quite proud of myself for conjuring up this article after a long week that included five days in a row of early morning work, hurting my back, passing out a couple times by accident, etc.

As for the Commander experience? It's pretty awesome and I can't wait to play it again soon.

WORD OF THE DAY! 11/14/13!

zip-line [zip-lahyn]
noun
1. Consisting of a pulley mounted on a cable between two poles or platforms set on an incline, they are designed to allow a person to use gravity to travel downhill, and can either be made short and low to the ground for children or progressively higher and steeper for fast speed travel & recreation for adult thrill-seekers.

EX. Mega Mewtwo Y's head does seem to inspire some weird and embarrassing explanations in the minds of Pokémon fans. For example, this artist saw an opportunity for Kangaskhan and her joey to have some fun on a zip-line designed in the image of Mega Mewtwo Y.

Unfotunately, Mega Mewtwo Y is not amused by such petty and limited perspectives.

WORD OF THE DAY! 11/12/13! POKÉBLOG X #5 HORDE BATTLES!

horde [hohrd]
noun
1. A large number, mass, crowd, multitude, group, etc.
2. A tribe or group of Asian nomads.
3. Any nomadic group of people or animals.
verb
4. To gather into a large number.

EX.  Let me start by saying... I don't like horde battles.

Ideally, in any rpg, when you start out fighting weaker enemies, moving up the ranks of difficulty, until you can take on more and more difficult challenges with each step forward. In a very simple and typical Dungeons and Dragons adventure you'd expect to see a low level party take on, you might start by fighting a small group of goblins, then usually a bigger monster or two like a couple bugbears, then you fight a boss monster like a young dragon they'd been keeping as a pet. That is the progression you wanna see in an RPG. As an added bonus, you have those players fight not just a bunch but a small horde of goblins. Unlike when they first fought they goblins, they now have the tools to properly take them on and, if they use them properly, can dispose of the great number of foes with ease. They can compare their two experiences with goblins and feel as if they have grown tremendously by realizing how they've gone from struggling with a small group of goblins to dominating a small army of them. In 4th Edition, they specifically created minions to help DMs construct this power trip of an experience.

Pokémon is an RPG too. You're supposed to feel that you're team has grown so that, by the time you're the champ, you can believe it. Ideally, horde battles should be challenging but give you the opportunity to feel powerful. While your Chespin once struggled to knock out a Pidgey at the beginning of your journey, your Quilladin should be able to easily handle a gang of Scraggy by the time you run into them but, instead, that is not the case. Rather than taking out several Pokémon at once, you have to usually take them out one at a time while they get five hits on your Pokémon. Rather than feeling like your knocking them out with your raw power, you're instead slogging through several turns to get the EXP and/or catch the last conscious Pokémon. It doesn't feel rewarding because a) there are not many moves that hit multiple opponents and b) it is a tedious affair if and especially if you wish to catch one of the members of the horde.

In the end, what could've been a satisfying part of the experience comes off a frustratingly mediocre addition that may be the weakest type of battle ever introduce.

Think about how satisfying it would be to be able to target multiple targets like, let's say, a horde of Zubats, with Thunder and wipe them off the screen? Maybe you could get rewarded based on your performance? What do you think?

WORD OF THE DAY! 11/10/13! POKÉBLOG X #4 WONDER TRADE.

Wonder Trade [wun-der-trehyd]
noun
1. Pokémon. A system introduced in the 6th Generation of Pokémon RPG titles, Pokémon X & Y, that allows a player to connect to the Pokémon Global Link and trade away any Pokémon for a random Pokémon from a random player that also chose to participate in such a random trade.

EX. Wonder trading is probably one of my favorite new features of X & Y but, like any system that lacks any sort of moderation, the users abuse it.

Ideally, someone puts a Pokémon that is hard to find, evolves through trading, is version exclusive, has good EVs/IVs and/or abilities and/or moves, or is shiny/special in some such manner up for trade in hopes of receiving, at the very least, a Pokémon of foreign origin. Instead? Well, you trade a Fennekin you hatched on Wonder Trade and wind up with a Pidgey.

To be fair, I do accept one other type of Wonder Traded Pokémon-- if you give it a funny name and/or moveset, I would give the trade a pass. It's kind of fun to receive a clever little joke from someone, especially if it can level up faster.

As for myself, I've traded version exclusives, hard to get Pokémon, and about six Stunfisks named "Flat Stanley" after the children's book/activity character where children make a construction paper Flat Stanley, send him through the mail to some business or distant place, and get him back with photos of his "adventure". I dunno, I think it's funny. Shrug.

So far, in Wonder Trade, I've received some really cool foreign Pokémon including a German Tyrunt and a French Fennekin, so it's not all bad. It really makes me think a Wonderlocke challenge could be fun, but that's a discussion for another day.

WORD OF THE DAY! 10/27/13! POKÉBLOG X #3

colleague [kol-eeg]
noun
1. A fellow worker, associate, or member of a staff, department, profession, etc.

EX. Alright, so we've talked a little about my core team of Pokémon and my thoughts on EXP share, now let's talk about the entourage of colleagues, made up of friends, rivals, and hanger-ons, that you meet in X & Y.

Your friends actually give you and your next-door neighbor rival (if you chose the male protagonist, Serena & if you chose the female protagonist, Callum) your starters. Your rival is an extremely ambitious but friendly person with the same ambition as your main character to be a Pokémon Master & the Champion of the Kalos region. Now, let's look at the losers from Vaniville...

Shauna is the bubbliest of your friends in pretty much any Pokémon game and, like you, is looking for a dream to call her own. So far, I haven't discovered much more about her, other than that she really does genuinely find every new experience to be special. On an unrelated note, her hair has some Pokémon-like qualities... That's odd.

Trevor's goal is to catch and catalog of Kalos's Pokémon for Professor Sycamore's research. He is the typical studious nerd of the group that is really serious and focused, but apt to have little anxiety attacks from his lack of social skills. Also, IS HIS HAIR A POKÉMON OR A HELMET!?

And here is Tierno and-- OH C'MON! HIS HAIR IS SO A POKÉMON?! AMIRITE!?-- back to the usual program... Tierno's goal in life is to create the world's greatest team of dancing Pokémon. He is a terrible trainer because he is easily distracted by movement. Also, he has one of the least popular Pokémon of all time on his shirt. As much as I like fat guy characters, since fatties are underrepresented in video games and anime, Tierno is, undoubtedly, kind of a loser.

Soon, we'll talk about some of the adult friends you meet in Kalos who're all, almost inarguably, more interesting and cool than your friends starting out on their journeys. At least, your friends are not the biggest losers in Kalos...

WORD OF THE DAY! 2/26/13.

atiptoe [uh-tip-toh]
adjective
1. Standing or walking on tiptoe.
2. Eagerly expectant, as anticipating a desired event or arrival.
3. Moving with caution or stealth, as avoiding calling attention to one's presence.

EX. I know that all the Pokémon fans out there are atiptoe for news on the upcoming 3DS release Pokémon titles, X & Y. We want information, we want spoilers, but most of all we want to know that the 6th Generation is going to be amazing. Just like the kids below who're standing atiptoe with the head of a Pokégod as a sacrifice to Arceus to keep Fennekin from evolving into another Fire/Fighting type.

WORD OF THE DAY! 2/18/13!

nymph [nimf]
noun
1. One of a numerous class of lesser deities of mythology, conceived of as beautiful maidens inhabiting the sea, rivers, woods, trees, mountains, meadows, etc., and frequently mentioned as attending a superior deity.
2. A beautiful or graceful young woman.
3. A maiden.
4. The young of an insect that undergoes incomplete metamorphosis.

EX. Alright, so this new Ninfia? Pokemon got spoiled last week (talked about it here) and its English name has been revealed as "Sylveon". As a D & D fan, this makes me think of Silvanus, the classic D & D god (based on a Roman god) of wild nature and druids. This also makes me think of "sylphs" a type of air-elemental or spirit. Also, Silph Co. was a company in the Pokemon games that made a device that allowed you to see and catch Ghost pokemon. Finally, someone was kind enough to point out that "nymph" (which place is into its other foreign names) refers to fairies and elves (which "sylph" does too) but also refers to several types of butterflies. It seems to use some normal moves and either a fighting and/or bug moves in the trailers. So what does that mean?

We'll have to wait to find out if it is a Ghost, Fighting, Flying, Bug, Normal, or some type of new typing of Pokemon... sigh...

NERD CULTURE SMACKDOWN: NEW POKEMON X & Y VERSIONS ANNOUNCED ON THE 3DS!

NERD CULTURE SMACKDOWN PRESENTS

CLICK THE LINK ABOVE FOR THE LOVE OF ARCEUS! Alright, exhale, inhale, and relax- NEW POKEMON! Okay, so I knew there was gonna be a big Pokemon announcement from Nintendo and I figured it was either going to be a Ruby and Sapphire remake for the 3DS (although I'd prefer they skip and just make Emerald cuz its superior) OR it would be about a new generation of Pokemon rather than a new spin-off series. I didn't expect the amount of information we got and, I must admit, I am as excited as I get with each announcement of a new gen of Pokemon. And so, after not doing a Nerd Culture Smackdown in weeks I am going to give you my initial feelings on the trailer and the revealed Pokemon. Heck, this might be what kicks of me doing Pokemon of the Week articles! WARNING: Nerd Culture Smackdown reflects my opinion on the moment I write the article and may not reflect reality.

First up, I wanna say that I will lose my crap if the music if the amazing theme from the trailer is used in the game; one of the most overlooked elements of the Pokemon games is the music and this new iteration of a classic theme pumped me up. Now, that I've got that out of the way, lets talk about the graphics, which you can see in the trailer and the picture above; I'm satisfied to see that they took Pokemon B & W II's graphics up a solid notch and, although the human's heads are as big as their bodies, it is a nice step toward the right direction. The environments look pretty interesting and make me think we're getting a Europe theme (look at the Eiffel-like tower above). The last thing I gotta say is that I hope that the protagonists are customizable this time around.

I also like the use of cell-shading for the Pokemon rather than Polygon-style I had expected. Just look at those pinchable cheeks!

Now let's take a look at the three  starters and the two legendaries:

Our first Pokemon revealed was Chespin, a grass starter (look at the green text and grass sprouting out of his head) and I have mixed feelings about its design: on one hand, we've never had a mammalian grass starter so the design could lead to a really cool evolved form with, since I'm seeing a mole or chipmunk, I'm seeing a Grass-Ground type in its final evolution. But, on the other hand, the design is a little wonky with a lot of little details that just feel sort of random and remind me a little too much of Patrat. I'm optimistic though.

I find Fennekin, the fire starter, to be too easy of a design and in fact, in my opinion, its the least interesting of the three-- I always start with the Fire starter in my first play-through of a generation of Pokemon games but Fennekin is making me hesitate in a way that Tepig never did (I love Tepig!). We've had lots of fox pokemon- between Vulpix, Ninetails, all of the Evee Pokemon and more- and the combination of a fire fox is just, well, boring. Its a cute design, but I wish it wasn't a starter. Then again, its final form could be insanely cool, so we'll have to see...

Believe it or not, Froakie, the water starter, is my favorite design of the three. We've had frog Pokemon, but his design looks fairly intriguing with the bubbles around the neck and on the nose (that's what I assume they are). I don't have a ton more to say about it, but I can foresee some neat stuff for this Pokemon's evolutionary design.

The legendaries look really cool and unique; the Y-legendary (I assume) appears to be some sort of dragon, dark, or flying type bird pokemon combo and the way he has three wings with claws (check out the "tail") makes him look pretty cool and I can see some interesting Pokemon designs are ahead.

Like the X-legendary (I also assume) with these awesome Christmas antlers and long legs that give him this really impressive look; I'm not really sure what type he'll be yet.

And that's all folks. Please leave some comments and argue with my opinions (cuz they're probably wrong!).

Do we get to go to Space? 0.0
