NERDCULTURE SMACKDOWN! POKÉMON OF THE WEEK! MAY 18- MAY 24/13!

#489 Phione & #490 Manaphy

In Generation 1, there were five Legendary Pokémon if you include Mew (six if you include Arcanine, but that just makes you a know-it all nerdwad). In the proceeding four generations (and including the two new ones for X & Y announced so far), we were introduced to an additional forty-five legendary Pokémon. That's right. We know of FIFTY legendary Pokémon before the release of Generation 6..

And, to be frank, many fans, including myself, have become fatigued by this. Almost 8% of Pokémon species are legendary. Does every generation need legendary Pokémon? Yes. But do we really need over a dozen in a generation with multiple forms? HELL NO. I'm putting my foot down and today we're talking about my very least favorite type of Legendary Pokémon. The vague formless childish fairy type of Legendary made to sell movie tickets and plushies today we're talking about Phione and Manaphy.

LAST WEEK'S POKÉMON OF THE WEEK: #66 MACHOP, #67 MACHOKE, #68 MACHAMP

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/18/13!

buzzkill [buz-kil]
noun
1. Someone or something that stops someone or a group or everyone from enjoying themselves.

EX. Things you may not know about me: I'm the "King of Buzzkills". You know what's also a buzzkill? Murder. Pokémurder. Poké-mass murder.

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/17/13!

Nintendo shuffle [nin-ten-doh-shuf-uhl]
noun
1. The sounds made when Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Nintendo 64 game cartridges rub their plastic against each other when in a pile or container.

EX. I have a big shoebox of SNES and N64 carts and they definitely make the Nintendo shuffle when I'm looking for a classic to play. As opposed to the soul-shattering sound of a cartridge or controller snapping into pieces.

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/16/13!

pentakill [pen-tuh-kil]
noun
1. Video games. The achievement proclaimed by the announcer, in League of Legends, when a player kills five enemy players in quick succession.

EX. You know what's cooler than watching a .gif of an old man performing a pentakill? Watching someone with no fore-arms or hands get a pentakill by playing with his elbows and foot. To put things in perspective, the odds of getting a pentakill, according to the game maker's statistics, is 1 in 1,500 games.

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/15/13!

contingency [kuhn-tin-jin-see]
noun
1. Dependence on chance or on the fulfillment of a condition; uncertainty; fortuitousness.
2. A chance, accident, or possibility conditional on something uncertain.
3. Something incidental to a thing.
4. A prepared plan for a specific situation.

EX. Literally, any discussion about Batman being up against any super villain, hero, or situation will eventually hit the speed-bump that is the Batman fan's creed that "Batman always has a plan (or something in his utility belt) and, given enough time to prepare, Batman can do anything."

The only problem I see with the contingency plan shown above is that, despite how many times Superman and others have probably thrown pieces of Kryptonite into the Sun,  it has never glowed green or hurt Kal-El (and Batman is probably smaller than the pieces of Kryptonite that have made it into the sun).

Also, if the radiation is doing that to Superman, humans (who have been proven to be vulnerable to continuous or intense exposure to Kryptonite energy) are probably already dead.

WEEKLY ROUND-UP! 5/6-5/12/13!

WEEKLY ROUND-UP PRESENTS
"TASTE THE RAINBOW, MOTHER FUCKER!"

Does anybody smell body oil and shamelessness? Ew...

6. MUSICAL MON! THE MAKING OF THE FRELJORD, GRAND THEFT AUTO V TRAILER, & JON WINS!

Anybody else out there stoked for GTA V?

5. WTF WED! LoL EDITION! DARIUS HIGH-FIVES TEEMO AFTER A TAPING OF 'MY BEAR TIBBERS' !

I covered a lot of League of Legends material, last week. From the Music of the Freljord to Poros to Teemo to Tibbers, there is a lot to talk about when it comes to my favorite new PC game. I'm still learning how to play the various roles so that when I hit max level, I can hit ranked with my buddies and help net some wins.

My best champ: Probably Alistar.

4. NERDCULTURE SMACKDOWN! POKÉMON OF THE WEEK! #387 TURTWIG, #388 GROTLE, #389 TORTERRA

What is your favorite Grass starter? Mine's Turtwig.

Speaking of the Freljord, I had a chance to play Sejuani & Trundle and, while I really wanted the Troll King to be my new main, I had better success with Sejuani. This week, Lyssandra is free, and I'm gonna see how she works.

2. TABLETOP TALES: DRAGON'S MAZE PRE-RELEASE! PT. 3 "HINDSIGHT IS 20/20 BUT..."

And so I finally finished my series of Dragon's Maze articles...
1. TABLETOP TALES: DRAGON'S MAZE PRE-RELEASE! PT. 4 "...LEARNING FROM YOUR MISTAKES I GOLDEN!"

In which, I hope I managed to learn a few things about how to better play Pre-Release Events in the future by taking advantage of more opportunities. I wish I could invest more into the hobby.

Any of my readers still play magic?

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/14/13!

gogo [goh-goh]

1. Full of energy, vitality, or daring: the go-go generation.
2. Stylish, modern, or up-to-date: the go-go social set.
3. Of or pertaining to the music and dancing performed at discotheques or nightclubs.
4. Performing at a discotheque or nightclub.
5. Seeking large earnings quickly by trading aggressively and often speculatively in stocks.

6. Marked by swift price upswings due to excessive speculation.
7. Being a time of great prosperity, economic growth, and optimism.

SOURCES: Dictionary.com, Serebii.net

EX. I got to say that these new-fangled gogo designs on these Pokémon revealed in Corocoro magazine are pretty banging (I also linked the new gameplay footage at the top).

Here is some info:

There is some character customization (I'm thinking very limited by the looks of it) and the new region is called Kalos. One of the cities, the one we see the big Eiffel like tower, is called Lumiose City and you may be able to ride some Pokémon in the city. Now, onto the new moppets.

Four Pokémon were revealed with the following Japanese names/English names and information involving them:

Yayakoma or Fletchling, the Japanese Robin Pokémon. It is a normal/flying type that appears to be able to learn a move called Nitro Charge.

Yamchan or Pancham, the Naughty Pokémon. It is a Fighting type Pokémon that looks like a Panda.

Gogoat, the Ride Pokémon. It's a Grass type Pokémon that you can ride in some section of the game!

And my favorite of the four, Elikiteru or Helioptile, the Generating Pokémon. It's a normal/electric type (that I hope evolves into an electric/grass type) and appears to know a new move called Parabola Charge. I love the little hat, the derpy eyes, and his color scheme.

Which one is your favorite?

MUSICAL MON! SPACE ODDITY COVER BY THE INTERNET'S FAVORITE ASTRONAUT!

MUSICAL MONDAY PRESENTS

Okay, so we've covered a remix of Space Oddity with brentalfloss's starfox cover and David Bowie as the Goblin King, but today is something special. Today, we're covering the first music video filmed in space.

Chris Hadfield is the internet's favorite astronaut; he's on the Canadian $5 note, has made several awesome videos answering people's questions about space (EX. "Do tears fall in space?" and "What happens if you wring out a wet towell?") and has generally been a champion of education, fun, and the human race.

And, about an hour ago, Chris Hafield began his return down to earth on a shuttle. I wish him the best and hope that someday we'll all have the opportunity for safe space travel.

WORD OF THE DAY! 5/13/13!

maternal bond [muh-tur-nuhl-bawnd]
noun
1. While typically formed between a child and it's mother, it may also occur between a woman and an unrelated child, such as in adoption. Hundreds of factors influence this bond-forming process that builds a connection between mother or mother-figure and child.

EX. First, some apologies; I intended this post for Mother's Day but between the holiday itself, my best friend's birthday, and allergies...I was pretty busy and/or miserable.

Cubone's maternal bond proves that love cannot be broken by death. After his mother's death, Cubone took his mother's skull as a partying gift to protect himself and avoids socializing with other Pokémon, hence it being called the Lonely Pokémon. On the night of a full moon, it's cries are said to especially dreadful since it recognizes its mother in the face of the moon.

I think that story all refers to a specific Cubone in Pokémon Red & Blue, because of the ghost at Lavender Town tower resembling a Marowak exists and sometimes they get lazy in the Pokédex.
