beholder [bih-hohld-er]
noun
1. Dungeons & Dragons. A fantasy creature created by Terry Kuntz, designed by Gary Gygax and first published in Dungeons and Dragons expansion Greyhawk (1975). The creature is a floating orb of flesh with one large eyeball, a humanoid mouth, and it's mass is covered in smaller eye-stalks. From each of its eyes it can cast deadly magical spells.

Beholders live in a cruel, xenophobic, and murderous societies that dwell in the Underdark. Beholders are almost universally hated and hate almost universally.They usually only put up with other species as slaves, but individuals have been known to take up residence as guards of dungeons and keeps. Beholder societies wage war amongst their own factions and against other races.
